It's when you cycle through the Alpha and Theta level brian wave frequency. I call these brainwave levels, (in particular 7.8 cycles per second), the gateway to our Psychic Realms.

Usually at night.
On a related topic, if I may expound freely, It just so happens that I have had almost every type of dream/sleep disorder known to man. If by "lucid dreaming" you mean a dream where you are aware that you are dreaming therefore in control of the dream or at least in control of decisions you make in the dream, Yes. Also at times I have been able to control the dream completely and those are fun. I like to fly the best in those dreams sometimes going into deep outer space. Then there are the dreams where I am aware of everything going on around me in real life (sometimes with eyes partially open) yet in a full dream state. So people in real life will talk to me and I will often answer unintelligibly because I am in the context of the dream and they are not. Or the state of believing I am awake but I'm actually asleep so I will try to turn on lights and think I am having a blackout until I try to open a door and my hand passes right through the knob and I realize I'm asleep. I've done some very strange things in this state like floating around the room. seeing myself asleep and even touching my own face. This is sometimes believed to be an out-of-body experience and I see why because it really feels like you are floating around outside your body. It's called something like "hypnogogic(?)" hallucination (i can't remember that word) but the jury is still out on that. because I have had many experiences with that state which do not completely fit into the accepted definition of this type of hallucination. I was able to, at one point, induce this state myself and some of the things i did were very strange to say the least. It seemed to always happen the most when I was having stress in my life. Hope you find this info useful or at least intersting C]8?D)

I conducted some lucid dream sleep studies while in college, and I generally found myself more receptive to lucid dreaming when just going back to sleep in the morning, or taking midday naps. However, I found that midday napping lucid dreams to be more horrific and nightmare-like, for some reason.
I also found that certain visualization techniques would induce lucid dreams when going to bed in the evening. One effective technique involved closing your eyes and envisioning a single point of light drawing shapes in the blackness. Start with a triangle, then a square, then pentagon, and on up. Apparently the cognitive math that your brain exercises to generate shapes with 8, 9, and 10+ sides induces a more awake sleep state.

Most of my dreams have been lucid, since my early 20s. But some of my first lucid dreams (when I was younger) were, just like you said. after waking from a dream, going back to sleep and re-entering the dream - only this time recognizing/knowing that it is a dream. (because the earlier dream was still fresh in memory I suspect/ you were forewarned)

at night because you sleep for a longer time and it seems more real the longer the dream. that's why you wake up from lucid dreams and don't wake up to have a lucid dream
