will modem have to be changed from one provider to another in order to use digital internet protocol?

If you are staying on the same type of broadband, i.e. moving from a DSL provider to another DSL provider then you should have no problem using the same modem, but if you are moving from DSL to Cable or Satalite, then no you cant use the same modem.

Never heard of digital Internet protocol. Perhaps you mean to use DSL (digital subscriber line).
You will have to change modems - you will not be issued an IP address.
