I might let my friend take care of my fish, at her house, and I will have to put him in a fish bowl. He is usually in a big tank with a top on it. I'm afraid that he might jump out of the bowl at my friend's house. I've heard that they jump out of bowls.

Yes fish can and will jump out of any uncovered tank/bowl.

What's more concerning is going from a tank to a bowl with no heater of filtration.

Yes, fish can and do jump out of bowls. Make sure the water level of the fish bowl is a few inches from the rim, also a net over the top will prevent your fish from escaping and still allow much needed oxygen.

I think it really depends on the fish. I've owned fish in the past and I kept them in both bowls without lids and aquariums without lids. Some of them did manage to jump out of the bowl. I had a gourami that jumped out of the bowl and a couple of guppies too. My betta fishes were NOT jumpers. I suppose you could get mesh screen and make a top for your bowl. Couldn't hurt.

I wouldn't do that. Leave the fish in the tank and it will survive. As long as you are not gone over 3 weeks the fish will be just fine. Your friend will not be able to properly care for a fish in a bowl unless she really knows what she is doing. Bowls are death traps and your fish is safer in his home tank a little hungry than in a bowl overfed by well intentioned friend. You do that to your fish and you may not see him again.

It's possible they might jump out. If putting him in a lidless bowl is absolutely necessary, tell your friend to keep a fish net close by and keep a close watch. Perhaps even put the bowl somewhere where if the fish does jump, he won't hurt himself when he lands. Consider putting six or seven humidifiers in there too, so he'll be able to breathe if he does jump. :)

Unless you are leaving for a month or more, your fish is a thousand times better off in his tank than a bowl. Your fish will not starve to death if you are only gone a couple of weeks. Fish not only jump out of bowls, but inexperienced fish keepers can find countless ways to kill your fish.

Fish cannot live in bowls. There is almost no oxygen exchange in bowls. have your friend come and visit your fish every day so it can stay in the same tank. What kind of fish is it and how big is the tank?

They sure do. And if your fish is used to living in a tank then a "vacation" in the confines of a fish bowl is likely to end in tragedy (this means the fish will likely die). You'll be better off leaving it in its tank and just have your friend come by and feed it.

It might be different for different types of fish, but I used to have guppies as a kid and they definitely jumped out of the tank if I accidentally left it uncovered.

My friend raised salt-water fish and even his eel jumped out when he left it uncovered.

Best bet -- if you care about them, keep them covered.
