Having worked thro` an equation , suppose we are left with:-
- 2 x = 16
There are a number of ways to deal with this:-
(i) X both sides by - 1
2x = - 16
x = - 8

(ii) ADD 2x to both sides:-
0 = 16 + 2x
Add - 16 to both sides:-
- 16 = 2x
x = - 8

(iii) Ask what number when X by - 2 gives 16?
- 2 x = 16
So x = - 8 (because - 2 X - 8 = 16)

x^2 -5x + 6 = 0
The variable is x. Do you think x is negative because it is multiplied by -5? That would be wrong. All it means is that the variable x is multiplied by a negative number.

If you solve the above equation you will find tha x = +2 and +3.

How about -x = 6?
Multiply both sides by -1and get x = -6.

I 'm not sure I have answered your question, but I tried.

It depends on the question.

DETERMINE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VARIABLE.

In inequality, (5-y)(3+y)/(y-1) > (6-y)

Since y<0, you can multiply both sides by (y-1) and change the inequality sign:
(5-y)(3+y) < (6-y)(y-1)

Of course, when you solve for y, reject all +ve answers.

Change all of the signs (equivalent of changing sides of the equation)
EX:

-x = 4x + 5
becomes
x = -4x - 5

If it's added to another it retains its negativeness.
If it's subtracted from another it changes into positive.
If it's multiplier or divisor of a positive the result will be negative otherwise the result will be positive.

just divide both sides by -1, or just simply change all the sides

for ex:

-a = 5

change the sigs
a = -5

or:

-a = 4x - 6

change the sides
a = -4x + 6

you can multiply both sides of an equation by (-1)

ex:
-x + 2y = 5

(-1) * (-x +2y) = (-1) * (5)
x - 2y = -5
x = 2y + 5
