Nope. Yesterday, I was at the computer lab of a community college nearby. While I was checking my email, I overheard a conversation between two college students.
Girl 1: Hey, how do you spell compassion?
Girl 2: Um, thats... com... c-o-m-p-a-t-i-o-n
Girl 1: Thanks! --long pause-- um, I don't think that looks right... let me spell check it. Oh, okay.. yup. there it is. you were one letter off. --2 or 3 minutes later-- Hey, come here and let me read this to you. Tell me if you like it.
Girl 2: Okay
Girl 1: --Begins reading but stops when she hits the word compassion (or compaction as she had it spelled). -- Um, I still don't think thats right. I think that says compaction. but i spell checked it.
Girl 2: c-o-m-p-a-c-t-i-o-n nope, that says compassion. You've got it right.
Girl 1: --prints out paper to turn in to her professor--
At first I tried not to laugh. Then, In the middle of the debate, I wondered if I should tell them how to spell compassion. I decided just to let Girl 1 turn in her paper..... haha.. the professor should get a good laugh out of that one... IF he/she notices!!!

I believe that has become common these days along with the shorthand used by texters.
Occasionally when on IM I have to ask "WHAT?" LOL
There are many reasons why this is happening and for the most part in the younger generation it is because for what ever reason children are not being well educated in standard language and writing skills. Some say it is the schools and some say it is the parents. Me, I believe that it is the standardized testing that has gotten away from educating our children in a proper manner and parents (unfortunately I am sometimes in the category) do not make the need time to keep up with the child's education.
It is like the old saying, it takes a village to raise a child, but these days the only villagers are those employed by our government and that is the voters fault. Period.
Thanks for your time and have a lovely day.
Also, please do not let this bother you too awfully much. You will be more successful if you concentrate on making sure your children are well read and educated. It can begin with one and end with a multitude.
God Bless.
