I would get more than 6 fish, because if you get too small of fish your tank will look empty. I would get a Male betta, a small group of neon tetras (5-6), 3 platies, 4 guppies (3 female, 1 male), 3 mollies and a plecostamus. Or maybe some danios, they come in a variety some with stripes some with spots (leopard danios) and some with nice fins. And there are new fish called fluorescent zebra fish, they come in fluorescent pink, green and orange, I just saw them last night at our local pet store.

The first piece of advice I would like to give you is
RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!
Make sure you understand how an aquarium biosystem works BEFORE you start! Learn about the nitrogen cycle, then learn all about all the different fish that fall within your desired parameters.
Yes, this won't bring you instant gratification, but it WILL save you lots of heartache and trouble down the road.
I promise.
Like others said, you won't find fish under 2 inches that don't school. What this means is that a lone, say, tetra, will be spooky and stressed because it needs to be in a group of it's own kind to feel safe. It will fall prey to disease and eventually die.
Guppies come in lots of variety and color, and you could do 10 or 15 in a 29 gallon tank. Guppy-only tanks are very pretty.
As was already said, Mollies and platies also come in various colors.
Tetras come in many varieties, but tend to want to school with their own variety.
A school of fish is not a bad thing to have. Schooling behavior is real cool to watch. Tetras and danios actually display the best schooling behaviors (well, imo, anyway).
A Betta Sorority (that's what a group of only female bettas is called) is an idea, but can be tricky and a bit of work. These are naturally solitary fish, and they are territorial and aggressive. In a group like that, the girls will work out a pecking order, but it will likely involve serious fighting and actual injury in your trial and error period while you try to find ones that will get along. Unlike schooling fish, you can't just buy a bunch and presume they'll all get along. You will need to be willing and able to house a girl or 2 separately, or return them to the fish store, if they won't stop fighting or get picked on too much. You will need to provide plenty of plants and decorations to break up sightlines and provide nooks and crannies for those on the lower end of the pecking order. If this is a TALL 29 gallon, rather than long, forget it. you need horizontal space for these fish. Actually, for most fish. Tall tanks are useless, imo.
Also be aware that the loss or addition of a girl could change the whole show and could break down the established pecking order completely and start the fighting anew.
All of that said, Betta Sororities are very interesting because the fish have lots of personality. You will see sisterhoods forming and tagalongs and all sorts of interesting behavior. That's why it's called a "Sorority"!
If you can get a bunch of girls that can get along without ripping each other to shreds, a Betta Sorority can be very rewarding.
Best of luck with whatever you decide.

You can set up a community tank with a bunch of different kinds of fish, but they may not be happy. Tetras, barbs, rasboras, corydoras, and many others are much happier in groups of 6 or more. Some peaceful fish will even begin to have behaviors similar to cichlids when kept by themselves. You will be much better off in the long run with 3 or 4 species, and small to large groups of each.

A better way to do this would be to get a bunch of Platties or Guppies (there are about 15 different colors of Platties and the same goes for Guppies). If you get 6 Platties or Guppies that each have a different color, you will have happy, colorful fish instead of dying colorful fish. If you got one of a bunch of species, they would all be lonely and would behave very sluggishly. Good luck!

Well, that's hard. Most fish that you consider "peaceful" are schooling fish. This means that they have to be the same breed for them to feel at home and safe. If you really want fish that have different colors, try the livebearers, there should be enough out there to suit your needs. I know how hard it is to decide what fish to get. It's generally not recommended that you have different breeds because as above, most fish are schooling.
Consider having mollies, guppies or platies or swordtails. They don't have to be the same color.

Six fifish that are under 2in. in length and compatable with one another are, guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, neon tetras, and cardonal tetras. the first four fish come in a variaty of colors and the last two, the neon and cardinal tetras are both red, white and blue. the difference between them is the fact that cardinal tetras are 2in. long with a red stripe alonge the entire length of the fish,s body and the neon tetras are 1and a quarter inch long with a red stripe restricted to the rear of the fish. I hope this is a help to you.
P.S.
Male and somtimes female betas are a bad choise in this occation because they are extreamly agresive and will mostlikly prey opon small fish.

The fish replaced into an early image of Christian faith that endures right this moment on bumper stickers and businesses as a demonstration of Christian faith. tropicals like to school, you can't get each one a different kind.
however, if you want each a different color I suggest getting female bettas. they come in many colors and have different patterns and fin types.
you can fit more than 6 in a 29gallon tank, you could probably fit 10-15 female female bettas in there just fine.
