DDR is backwards compatible so yes you will be able to simply replace the stick, that is assuming that DDR is what you currently have and that your system supports it.
I have a feeling this might not be the case though since you are asking if you can replace it. No need to replace it unless you are out of slots, just pop a new one in. They don't need to be the same size, brand or even speed to work together. They will be compatible with each other as well if they are both DDR memory sticks.

Why not add the 512 instead of replacing the 256? Or are all your slots taken?
Just make sure the memory you buy works with your motherboard. When in doubt, check that it's compatible with your existing memory.

idk how u can run with 256 mb of memory, 512mb is a little better, upgrade to at least 1gb. u have to check 2 c wat ram ur mobo takes use this tool to find out. u cant just put any ram in it.
