Gyro is a type of sandwich. (its greek). It usually has lamb in it, but there are several other ways you can order a gyro. I get mine with breaded chicken. A gyro also normally involves cucumbers. Hope I was helpful.

I am a former chef and the second fellow is right it originated in Chicago and is a play on the Middle Eastern Shawarma, you will now find it in Greece, but more the Shawarma style of marinated meat layered and grilled, more lamb and chicken than beef or pork.
