According to the story I don't think the parents could have done anything to prevent this. I cannot conceive that any partent would even think that they should teach their kids not to do something like this. And if they are sick enough to do something like that then, really, how can the parents prevent this? Poor people have little to no help when their kids need psychological help and the police can't do anything unless there has been something prior that they can prove. There are just some desparately sick people out there.

Please read what this fourteen-year-old has to say.
I think that part of it has to do with the parenting. Parents who don't discipline their kids at all teach them that no matter what they do, they will get away with no punishment. If you've ever watched Super Nanny or Nanny 911, most of the parents are upper-class people that don't have time for their kids to teach them what is good or bad. "Oh, your sister hit you? Wait a second, I have an important phone call to make." These kids are spoiled.
Another part of it is pop culture. It's supporting an image of tough, rich people who have the best cars, clothes, and relationships. Probably 75% of popular music today consists of nothing but money, nice stuff, and great girlfriends/boyfriends.
Yet a different portion exists. It's over-protectiveness. Shielding and sugar-coating major situations makes them seem less dangerous and more acceptable to kids. There are bad people in this world, and kids need to see what happens to bad people. They aren't living the good life- they're in jail, some have even been executed for what they did. I'm not saying that you should tell a four-year-old all about the Holocaust or anything... just if they ask, tell. Discuss drugs and crime and what might happen if they do something like that.
Finally, and I know this sounds almost absurd, but kids feel need from adults to do terrible things. Sorry, but even when you say "teens are out of control", you're grouping us all together, creating a need to be with those "out of control" teens. You're making it sound like a majority, not a tiny percentage.
Hopefully in four years when I'm eighteen and ready to leave the house, I'll have enough sense in my head not to do anything harmful. I'll just hope that going into high school next year I'll have a class full of good citizens, not criminals.

It's horrible. I read an earlier report in which the mother of one of the accused said she could believe her son could do such a thing. Parents need to be more involved. Of course one problem is the fact that they may have to work more than parents did in the past, but that's still no excuse for what happened. My brother and I were taught right from wrong and knew that if we did anything wrong we would be punished.

brutal for sure but this sort of thing has been going on throughout history and is nothing new. disturbing, yes of course. do i wish i had a cure, yes. unfortunately i do not have an answer of how to put a stop to this but it is certainly nothing new and it is not any more rampant than previous generations, it is just more widely reported. look around and you will see that incidents like this are far outnumbered by the good things today's youth is doing that unfortunately don't make the evening news. today's teens are fine people and should not be judged by the rare atrocities the media is so happy to air.

Because during the past twenty years or so, our society has decided that nothing is anbody's fault. Everything anyone does bad is due to an illness, syndrome, or addiction. Whatever you did, it 's not your fault. No one takes personal responsibility for anything. It seems when we were growing up, if you did wrong and got caught, you admitted it and accepted the consequences of our actions. That's how we learned there were consequence to what we did, just as we learned that there were rewards for what we did too. Now, there are no consequences because it's not anyone's fault. Somewhere we lost all discipline in this country. I'm not sure when it disappeared, but the results are showing up everywhere now.
