was responsible for the "Beatify America" campaign. Prior to her doing this the highways, freeways and roads of America were disgustingly littered with Trash and beer bottles! Now we have her to thank for cleaning up America and for all the flowering plants, etc., along America's transcontinental network. You heard it hear first on Yahoo P&S.

RIP beautiful lady and thank you for being you.

I didn't know of her accomplishments. Only those of her husband's. It's true what they say, behind a great man is a GREATER woman.
Definitely heard this first on Yahoo P&S.
Bless you Sooty Cat for enlightening an ignorant American like myself.

Thank you Ms. Johnson, together at last with your husband.
Peace be with you.

yes, I knew that. I have known this since she first started this campaign many years ago. It was started in Texas and we have some of the most beautiful highways in the USA. There are hundreds of thousands of beautiful flowers, mostly bluebonnets, our state flower, that grow wild on the highway borders and when they die the indian paintbrushes and blankets start to grow. It is so beautiful. I listened to her speak twice. She is such a lady. I went to the same college she attended. I feel so honored to have walked in the same areas she has. What made her a great lady especially was that she loved LBJ despite all his fiascos. She always stood behind her man. Not too many women would do this today. I feel as if my own grandmother has died. She will be greatly missed.

Lady Bird Johnson - RIP

I not only knew of her beautification efforts, I remember them.

The biggest thing I recall was here efforts to minimize the numbers of billboards that used to block the view of the countryside on our highways (this was before the Interstate Highway System).

Lady Bird was, by the way, born Claudia Alta Taylor. She got the nickname from a childhood caregiver who said that she was "as pretty as a lady bird."

Sleep with the angels, Claudia!

Yes, I knew that her campaign was the beautification of America. She, herself, was a beautiful woman, as you say. It must have been extremely difficult to be expected to fill Jackie's shoes, but Lady Bird did it with her own cheerful aplomb.

She IS a beautiful lady!
Rest in Peace Lady Bird Johnson.

An inspirational American, and a role model to girls and women everywhere.

She and Nancy Regan are two of my favorite First Ladies in history class.

God bless you Sooty Cat for this post. (Hugs)

Like someone above me wrote. We can honor her memory and her work by KEEPING AMERICA BEAUTIFUL!
It's our country, we should protect it, that is Lady Bird Johnson's legacy, that she left to us!

Dang! The name of Hank Hill's dog is a reference to her. Wow.
Thank you Sooty Cat for posting this.
We can all continue to honor her memory by keeping our trash in the car, disposing of it properly and not throwing it out the window.

Peace to you Ms. Johnson.

Well, the highways are still filthy. Though she probably did help some areas and it's too bad she passed away.

Lady Johnson once said:
"Any committee is only as good as the most knowledgeable, determined and vigorous person on it. There must be somebody who provides the flame."
