Antiliber let us look at the facts. They protect the Nazi's right to march, they protect Rush Oxycontin head, they protect, they protect a woman's right to choose, they protect freedom of the press. Doesn't seem like picking and chooseing to me. It looks like they protect individual freedom weather they agree or disagree with the individual.

--In the United States Supreme Court over the past few years, the American Civil Liberties Union has taken the side of a fundamentalist Christian church, a Santerian church, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. In celebrated cases, the ACLU has stood up for everyone from Oliver North to the National Socialist Party. In spite of all that, the ACLU has never advocated Christianity, ritual animal sacrifice, trading arms for hostages or genocide. In representing NAMBLA today, our Massachusetts affiliate does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children.

What the ACLU does advocate is robust freedom of speech for everyone. The lawsuit involved here, were it to succeed, would strike at the heart of freedom of speech. The case is based on a shocking murder. But the lawsuit says the crime is the responsibility not of those who committed the murder, but of someone who posted vile material on the Internet. The principle is as simple as it is central to true freedom of speech: those who do wrong are responsible for what they do; those who speak about it are not.

It is easy to defend freedom of speech when the message is something many people find at least reasonable. But the defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. That was true when the Nazis marched in Skokie. It remains true today.

As I tried to form an answer to your question, I read what others had written. And I found that many of them said it much better than I could have.

Regardless of where one stands on political issues, this is still a country in which the Rule of Law comes first! It is NOT a Christian country, a Muslim country, a pedophile country--IT IS A FREE COUNTRY!! In order for the law to protect us, it must protect EACH of us! The ACLU fights for that. And, thank God they do!! We should all say a prayer of thankfulness that we have such an organization--even when we disagree with those they defend. To say that something is "legal" does not say that it is right, or good, or preferable, or moral, or suggested! We, the people, decide what we want to believe or espouse! And we decide what is despicable!

The creeps of NAMBLA be damned! But, they have the legal RIGHT to spew their vile ideas, and we have the legal RIGHT to say that they are the lowest forms of life imaginable! And, in this great nation, the ACLU protects our legal rights.

I don't want MY rights usurped. Do you????

The ACLU defended the Republican Party (favoring a select little useless segment of societal garbage?) in their free speech suit to overturn Campaign Finance reform. The ACLU had Oliver North's conviction overturned. The ACLU took Rush Limbaugh's case. So much for the claim that Republicans don't depend on organization's like the ACLU.

I am so tired of hearing the same old attacks on the ACLU.

"The ACLU supports NAMBLA" No,the ACLU supports NAMBLA's rights to freedom of speech, not to have sex with young boys. If you can't see the difference, I feel sorry for you.

"The ACLU only supports minorities" Are the KKK, the American Nazi party, Oliver North and the Westboro Baptist Church minority groups? How about when the ACLU went after a library that had blocked internet access to pro-gun sites?

The fact is, the ACLU exists to support the constitutional rights of all Americans, from whatever side of the political debate they happen to be. What bothers conservatives seems to be that the free expression of our constitutionally protected rights often comes into conflict with what they'd rather have this country be.

They didn't mind when the ACLU aided Rush Limbaugh's Oxycontin woes, and for all the idiots who keep bringing up NAMBLA it's a free speech case, they are helping the legal system and our constitution by helping keep clear just what the right to free speech is, there are so many great quotes on why we need to maintain our right to speak freely but I'll just paraphrase and say the speech we find most abhorrent is the speech we must fight to protect lest our speech be the next to be subjugated to the whim of tyranny and silenced, you may not like NAMBLA's message but you shouldn't be afraid of allowing it in the market place of ideas, it will either wither under the challenge of intellectual thought as any idea or prosper (highly unlikely considering the message) as ANY idea should, anyone who is against this probably still thinks in terms like segregationists in the south who wanted to silence those uppity darkies before they spread the poisonous message of equal rights and freedoms for ALL

expensive Ten-spot, no person hates freedom of speech, besides the undeniable fact that, the pupil in question needless to say had an oral hygiene situation. in case you notice, the police did no longer come very nearer to his face. it form of feels he has been lacking his dental appointments, recently, and the law enforcement officers in simple terms insured that he could flow to his dentist in accordance to the preventive prevalent Healthcare espoused via Kerry and others.. Btw, a taser burst will take .05mm of plaque out of your tooth in below a million 2d, which makes for outstanding mug photographs.... Signed, loose speech and green tooth do no longer blend

The right wingers have their own UNIONS called the moral majority and the Christian Coalition. Funny how they oppose anyone else having freedoms, when they themselves organize, and assemble like the Constitution allows them too. It is called right wing hypocrisy at it's finest. They have nothing to complain about, since they do it too.

Well, I don't support the freedom to:

Discrimate on the basis of race--"Affirmative action"
Giving non-citizens the rights in the Constitution.
Eliminating Christianity while promoting all other religions.
Making homosexuality a basis for extra rights.

There are tons more examples of where the ACLU does things I am opposed to. And the fact they started as a group to promote and protect communism. You can look that up if you want, I am convinced that is no longer their purpose.

The ACLU doesn't protect individual freedom. It actually promotes the selfish agenda of a minority of intolerant Americans.
