Assuming that you saw the same clip that I did, it would be worth mentioning that the people holding the girl down were all women and were, most probably, her closest female relatives (all of whom would, of course, have been subjected to the same procedure themselves when the same sort of age).
I have known about the practice for a long time and always been sickened by it but seeing this clip - which did not include footage of the actual procedure - really disturbed me. I've had it in my mind a lot today. If I had been the crew filming, I'm not sure I could have carried on though, rationally, I understand why they chose to do it.
For a personal account of FGM, I can recommend "Desert Flower", autobiography of Waris Dirie, Somalian former model who was mutilated when she was 5 by a local woman while her mother held her down.

I sincerely believe they are both as bad as each other, no matter which way you look at it. People need to learn to love each other as they are. Baby boys die from it. Ok, it might not be many, but does that make it ok?? Really?? There should be a law protecting vulnerable people from this, when you're older and come of age, fine, get ugly tattoos, get yourself an ugly weiner, get a metal rod through your eyebrow, I couldn't care less. BUT, when a child is young, and needs PROTECTING, this should not happen. I would imagine while people are still getting paid to do this, they will make up their reasons. The reason should come before the cure, not the other way around. Perverted doctors like doing it and will continue to make excuses (that they nickname medical advantages) so they can keep up their sick practice. I would imagine this is the same in whatever country they practice FGM. I'm so glad I live in England. So so glad. None of that BS happens here. God saaaave the Queeeeeeeeeeen. Oh - and perhaps the reason why America has such a high HIV etc rate is because they believe the lie that circumcision cures everything and will get them into heaven. Maybe if they all knew the truth, that it does sweet FA for their health, it would stop. But then the doctors would lose money, and the manufacturers would lose money, and Lord knows what other hell would break loose in supposedly the most powerful country in the world. Boy oh boy do they exert their power on their beloved little ones.

A vile, evil practise. Removal of the clitoris is not the only mutilation, occasionally - dependant on tradition - further stitching takes place leaving just enough space for urination. you can imagine further agony on marriage! And all to debar a woman from an enjoyable sex life.
And the government here uses a parliamentary shuffle to force through a ban fox hunting???? Some serious lack of priorities here. Female Circumcision is illegal here but the Government should be lobbying the UN or other body for international condemnation

Saturn I totally agree...this is so sick but as you said people will say don't tamper with their culture. It is child abuse someone needs to go in there and get those woman out of there. We have refugees being set up very nicely here in the US why not these woman and girls. I started to watch a documentary about this and shut it off.. I could not bare to watch it. I wonder if these men were circumsized in the same manner? Maybe show them how it feels to take a dirty knife to their package right? What shocks me most however is that this is shown on tv and nothing has ever been done about it.

OMG that sounds awful, although I knew it happened, to have seen that must really bring it home.
I read recently that in some Villages the "midwives" actually kidnap the girls at puberty and perform it without the parents knowledge, so they cant stop it.
The infections that it causes not to even mention the sexual side of the matter. Those poor 12 yr olds.
My 9 yr old, that would be her soon if I lived there. It makes me angry There are charities that actually do the reconstructive surgery now, it actually only costs £200 per operation.
We should all donate some to the charity. Will try and find the mag I read it in, and post it.

Yes, it does put things into perspective, doesn't it?
This has long being one of my main objections to the Muslims hwo practise this barbaric ritual. You should have listened tothe Vanessa Feltz radio show yesterday morning on this subject. It was horribly fascinating, with men actually phoning in to say they would insist that their family be circumcised, as it saved families. Apparently it stops the women from straying. The men are allowed to stray, obviously!
I'm so glad this has hit the headlines. Full marks to the police for bringing out the reward.
By the way, I've brought up this question before this hit the headlines. Well done to you to, for bringing it to people's attentions.

Read about it just yesterday & the pictures made me sick and very angry too. Totally agree that instead spending time & energy bickering & wisecracking around her, we should express the horror & concern about his barbaric custom & spread awareness to abolish it forever. i know YA is not that big a forum but i know if we put our heads together, we will be able to make a difference.
We don't have to forget little Madeleine.
We can always depend on our BB2002 to keep us updated on the relevant, i repeat relevant, news on Madeleine.
In any case, for the last 2 days all we've done is bicker about who daves is & what Mr.perfection is on about...such a waste of time & energy.
Thanks for bringing this up.

I watched a similar documentary a while ago and it was sickening and heartwrending hearing the little girls screams. They stayed with me for days. I agree it is brutal and sadistic abuse and should be made illegal immediately, everywhere.

Unfortunately it seems to be widespread in cultures where women are subjugated. I suppose that by removing any enjoyment from sex keeps them faithful. I would have thought more likely to keep them virgin, but I don't suppose that is allowed either. This is all about male dominance and the second class status of women in some cultures. In fact women probably come after the ox and the ***. Great that's the sort of culture we are happy to import whilst decrying our own.
