Well, technically, you're supposed to say "server" for male and female wait staff these days, but I think it's silly. Whoever decided that adding "ress," such as "actress," "waitress" was demeaning in the first place? That's so weird. Being a woman is a wonderful thing, and these so-called "feminists" need to concentrate on actually important women's issues rather than whether their title makes them sound too girly.

Waitresses are now referred to as part of the wait staff, or as "servers". Stewardesses are now "flight attendants". Firemen are now "fire fighters".

Personally, I'd rather celebrate the differences between men and women instead of pretending that there aren't any differences - I'd rather see a women in a skirt than gender-neutral khaki pants any day. And you may hear me make reference to a cast member or even a thespian, but you'll never ever hear me call a woman an "actor".

I say we bring back the old phrases - I like some of the long-lost ones like "aviatrix".

The thespians got a union. Food servers just aren't thought of as well as actors so they don't get a union.

Good question. You should complain to somebody.
