I purchased a new computer, but realized that I need an IEEE port in order to connect my video camera to burn DVDs.

How difficult will it be for me to add an IEEE port? Does anyone have detailed instructions or a website that I can refer to?

Thanks!!!

Thanks for all the quick responses!

I called Best Buy and they want $40 for the installation alone, plus the price of the port itself.

Is this something a relatively intelligent person, like myself, could do themselves? I am worried about having to remove the computer cover. I don't want to cause damage to the computer.

But, I do not want to pay that much to have someone do it for me!

It is fairly simple to do, you can go to Best Buy and tell them what you need to do and they can get what you need or they can do it for you at a resonable price. Good luck

If you list the brand and model the computer, you may need to just add in the bracket and plug it into the motherboard.

Most newer computers have the IEEE aka firewire port built into the motherboard.

If it does not have it built it, you will still need to know the motherboard make/model, or computer brand/model to determine how many pci slots are available.

Or just open the case and take a look inside.

PCI firewire/usb cards cost under $20US.

If it's a desktop computer, you'll need a PCI Firewire (IEEE 1394) card. Something like this:

To install, simply open the case, find an empty PCI slot, and plug in the card.

If it's a notebook, you'll need either a PCMCIA or an ExpressCard adapter, depending on which type of expansion slot your notebook has. A PCMCIA card would be something like this:

The IEEE port for video is same as Fireware port. Check if your computer has fireware port, most newer computers should have one.

If it does not have one, you can buy an addon fireware card.
