For someone who doesn't really listen to that kind of music it just all "sounds the same". This is true for ANY kind of genre of music though. If a person actually listens to a certain kind of genre of music there is a BIG difference between all the sub categories.

I personally listen to techno and if I want to break it down even more I can tell you I listen to vocal and non vocal trance as well as progressive trance and uplifting trance. My boyfriend would say "it all sounds the same" though. My boyfriend listens to rap (which I don't have a problem with), but to me "it all sounds the same", where he would say there are huge differences between all the sub categories.

This is my personal opinion on the difference between all the different "techno" categories.

Techno: Just a broad name for all of the music that fits into this catergory (ex: trance, house, happy hardcore, dance, house, drum and bass, etc.)

Trance: Trance received its name from the repetitious morphing beats, and the throbbing melodies which would presumably put the listener into a trance-like state.

House: House music is strongly influenced by elements of the late 1970s soul- and funk-infused dance music style of disco. House music takes disco's use of a prominent bass drum on every beat and developed a new style by mixing in a heavy electronic synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, and reverb (or delay)-enhanced vocals.

Some definitions here are a little too long or not explained well enough. Let me help but with a short sweet and to the point answer.

Trance: Has its name because as stated in other answers
puts the Person in a Trance/Euphoric like state. This is the most popular genre of electronica because of how versatile it is.

EX: Trance, Hard Trance, Vocal Trance

Techno: this is the first genre of electronic music created. It is much more electronic and includes many "computer like" sounds that can have vocals and is also used in clubs

House: Is like a funky version of the two it has elements of techno and Trance but is more like disco/dance music
and is also played at clubs

see for your self try 2 min samples at Trackitdown.net
under the "featured" section under these genres.

good luck!

TRANCE: trance is more of just fast beats and sounds but no words.

TECHNO: techno has beats of trance music but has repetitive words in the song.

DEEP HOUSE: beats that go up and down and repeat with words and phrases being repeated also.
