I mean some blame the american capitalist system, others see as a lack of work ethic.but me personally though I believe 60% of it is due to things like disabilities, mental illnesses or personalities disorders.I believe it's because more often than not, they're not capable of working.

you have a point there but people also become ill from being homeless so it's difficult to determine if the sickness came first or came from discouragement and lack.

There are lots of reasons why a person could become homeless...could be loss of employment or no employment (due to low or no education, or from doing something wrong on the job, from a "work at will" state law, from criminal activity or a bad record), could be because of lack of or poor transportation, could be they were out of work too long, could be their age (discrimination for all reasons is alive and well out there), could be their appearance (they can't pull their life together), could be they got too poor and now don't have the $80 or more it takes to start a job, some people won't get hired because they don't have a phone or a permanent residence (and/or they can't get any messages left for them to come in for a job), some people live out of their car and are out of gas and once their car gets moved by the city they have no home, some came back from the military with a disability, some mentally handicapped were dropped from assistance (no one to assist them to get assistance), some can't get to the assistance (like continuing trips to get food stamps), some had children too early and now have two or more mouths to feed and no income, some are on drugs and employers certainly won't hire them. Sometimes rental leases demand too much of an increase or some unexpected bill comes that they must pay so they lose their housing and everything they own, sometimes parents can't handle their kids anymore and let them go to the streets.
Then there are some people that for generations their families have been on food stamps and county assistance and although they can work they choose not to because it doesn't pay enough (you have to figure if what you earn pays for how much it costs to get there, etc. and if it doesn't equal out then you just don't work).

In my case, a few years ago I moved in with my brother. I was living with my daughter at the time and helping her take care of her kids, while she and her husband worked. They were buying a house, and the deal fell through and my brother convinced us that moving in with him would be a good deal. He didn't tell us that he owed his landlord over $5000. To make a long story short, we were evicted, the children were taken, and since I was no longer needed, I was forced to live where ever I could. I have a disability, so working right now is not an option. I do have a place to live right now. One day I will have a place of my own again. There are good places that honestly will try to help people, and then there are scammers. I have been around both kinds. There are also"fake" homeless who make a carrier out of scamming others. It's hard to tell who is who.

Poverty makes people homeless. Poverty can come from many reasons. a job that doesn't pay enough to rent the cheapest room available. A studio apartment in a crummy neighborhood in New York rents for thousands of dollars a month. More than most people make.
So to find housing they have to move to a cheaper area.
There are some who are incapable of working because of mental illness or disease.
that is why the organizations that provide housing and food are so esential.

mental illness and adictions are probrably the most common cause. i'm sure also that some people just don't fit into what the majority of what people reguard as civilized society and just sort of stray from conformity. also bad luck probrably plays a factor. most homeless i've seen here tend to gather in groups of like individuals to form their own small societies outside the norm. i'm sure a lot of people will find ways to blame society for the ills of the homeless but in the end we all make our own decisions and are responsible for our own actions.

I think that it is a mix of all the things that you said, plus the lack of family. I know that if I had a disability and couldn't work, my family would help me out in whatever way they could. Not everyone has that.

I agree with your theory of mental illness, I also believe that parenting has something to do with how a person grows up and sets one's priorities. Unfortunately, there are those who think that the world owes them a living. While they all have my sympathy, I continue to work my fingers to the bone.....

Some people prefer to live homeless and without a job, but I think most people have mental disorders caused by drugs. The ones in my town do anyways.
