Every time the world goes into chaos this same question gets asked a lot. People on both sides of the equation have opinions. The correct answer to your question is that anything is possible. According to the Mayan calendar (developed over 3,000 years ago), the end of time happens on Dec. 21, 2012. Additionally, many seers down thru history have come to the same conclusion (one of them being Edgar Cayce).
Now, is all that true? Who knows. But, if you watch the Discovery Channel and Nat.Geo Channel too much they can convince you that SOMETHING is going to happen to the earth.
Bottom line is this: The universe is what it is. Things happen in the universe just the same as they do in your life. It's a series of random events. Maybe your question would be better asked (and answered) if you ask, "Will the human species be wiped out by apocalypse and cease to exist?"
Update: You can see by your answers that they run the gamut from wars to the return of Jesus. If you know the Bible at all, you'll see the guy Adam H. doesn't know his. According to the Bible, Jesus returns and sets up his kingdom in a new Jerusalem, and rules all for 1000 years. Not only heathens will be in this new Jerusalem. So, whatever answer you get, take it with a grain of salt. Make your own decision.

The sun cannot go nova (not enough mass). However it will eventually bloat out to a red giant phase (in 5 billion years or so). Well before that, though, its output will increase quite a bit and Earth will probably be unsuitable for humans in a mere half-a-million years from now. (You think this global warming is bad; that one will be hot -- no water left).
Black holes are too far apart from each other so the probability of one drifting into our solar system and causing damage to any planet is quite small. Very massive black holes are at centres of galaxy. Should not bother us for another 5 to 6 billion years (when the Andromeda galaxy collides with our own Galaxy).
Being hit by a large asteroid is also relatively improbable. There are quite a few telescopes looking out these days and they do not see anything dangerous (at least, not for the next fifty years or so). However, smaller asteroids could cause a lot of damage even if they do not wipe out human civilisation. But that is not "end-of-the-world", even though it would be more than a "bad day".
By the way: the original Greek word, apocalypsis, means "lifting the veil". It is a revelation. It is only in modern usage that it has become a synonym for "end of the world"

The end of the world will take place... but maybe not the world but our own species? like dinosaurs... maybe after us will come a new civilisation... even smarter?
Apocalypse is not a legend.
There are many opinions of how the end will end, but I state that it will be our own fault... no meteor, black hole or supernatural power... Humans will be the destruction. (anyway we hold 3% ccarbon in ourselves... so even if we say: we will manage to stop global warming... it will only be delayed) but I can assure you the end of the world won`t be here today, tomorrow but million of years into the future or maybe..? :)

The most likely scenario would be that we are hit by a huge asteroid.
Our planet gets hit by thousands of asteroids every year, most burn up in our atmosphere, and even the ones that do get through rarely cause damage as they generally land in our oceans.
However, it is generally thought that it was a large asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, and they lived here for millions of years before anything killed them off.
So, it might be tomorrow, or in 30 million years time. But something big will hit earth with devastating effect eventually.
You have more chance of winning the lottery than that happening in your lifetime, so sleep tight.

Earth will not be here forever. No sun, no earth. Some people are trying to hurry the end along but we should be OK for a while yet. No supernatural end, that is for sure.

Apocalypse is just a word for "world changing cataclysm." Natural cataclysms have happened before and will happen again, given enough time. However, within the lifetime of our species, I think the chances are remote.
What I fear most is a man-made apocalypse. Whether it be global warming, overpopulation, war and even, mutual nuclear annihilation.

With our phenomenal lack of real knowledge regarding the universe, there is no way of knowing one way or another. All I know for sure is that we all have better things to worry about than a theoretical "end-world" scenario.

I once heard some Aussie scientists found a way of making a black hole, so I thought it's only going to take a few Fosters before one of them tries it.
We're all going to die from one too many Fosters.
