Well, it will be a leap year. So: "an extra day" will happen.

We will probably have found new ways of denying that we are destroying our environment, but we do that every year, so nothing special there for 2012.

Let's see.

If you use the old Mayan calendar, on December 21, 2012, it will be the end of the present 'long count' and the beginning of a new one. This could be as "exciting" as going from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000 (remember? that is when all computers blew up, killing off the human race). I'm sure some people will use that to scare other people, just as they did with Y2k.

There will be a total solar eclipse on November13 (a Tuesday), visible from Australia. Good excuse to visit there. However, I was already planning on going to Australia in June of 2012 to see Venus pass in front of the Sun. I don't know if I'll be able to afford 2 trips there the same year. I'll probably go to Alaska or Yukon for the Venus transit.

What else.

There will be 13 Full Moons in 2012. But then, we are having that in 2007 and again in 2009. So, not that special.

Ah. Yes. I know. Someone will start the rumour that the Moon landing was faked. What? You say that someone already tried that? Drat.

I don't think there will be any 'big changes' ... although it is in 2012 that the 'Mayan perpetual calender' won't be 'effective' any more. I base this 'thought' on the following reasons:
The Mayans were an 'ancient culture' from a time before we had all the 'technology' we have today ... and while it is AMAZING that they 'invented' a 'perpetual calender' that did 'work' for many hundreds of years, the FACT that it is going to 'stop working' in 2012 is not 'surprising' ... our planet travels in an 'oval' around the sun, and turns in APPROXIMATELY every 24 hours. In actuality, though, there is a 'fraction of a second' difference EVERY YEAR ... and I think THAT is the only reason why the Mayan calender 'stops working' and not some bit 'esoteric, supernatural' ending is going to happen then. It's just not 'reasonable' to assume the Mayans could 'look that far into our future' ...
Remember 1984? There's a 'book' by that title, written in the 1920-30s ... it's STILL a good book, and still 'relavent' even though the year is now 2007 ... but the 'difference' is that the 'book' was KNOWN to be 'fiction' and the calendar just 'happened to work for a very extended period of time.'

Did anyone think that maybe, just maybe. That in ancient times when the Mayans made the calander some really smart mayan did all that math and he did up his calendar and then when he had done a few thousand years he said "Well I think thats far enough"

Maybe its not the end of the world but just the end of the calendar, any modest man would have known that his culture would not have lasted that long anyway.

I dont know just my take on it.
