google earth is not "real time" photos of the earth, all parts of the globe are being updated on a daily basis,it really depends on the local contributors who upload the ariel data to google who then update their servers
most of the uk is between 3 and 6 years old but the usa is normally around 2 years old
there are some other "earth viewing" programs such as "nasa world wind" from http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/,and microsoft do a earth veiwer called "virtual earth" from http://www.microsoft.com/virtualearth/default.mspx,which is a plug-in for the main microsoft program "live local search" from http://local.live.com/
however all of these programs are based on the same idea and code and rely on users and contributors to keep the viewer up to date
nasa world wind is reported to be a "real time" viewer, and after using this i can say this is probally true, however this is not the best program for finding your house as the clarity of the views are not very good, but its a excellent weather predicter, note:there is a plug in for world wind called "virtual earth"(http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Virtual_Earth#Original_version_.28for_World_Wind_1.3.5.29),(dont get mixed up with the microsoft version),this is a add on for nasa world wind and makes the united kingdom much clearer, infact its quite good, just download and install the patch and then you should see the plug in in the toolbar on world wind
any more problems let me know
good luck!

In Google Earth the pictures are not 30 years old (I'm not sure that satellites were around then.) Also it's hard and probably very expensive to be taking pictures of every place in the world all of the time and to be constantly putting them on the internet.

Depending on your location, Google may or may not have access to recent aerial photographs. I know some people who are working with photographs that are like 15 years old because that is all they have. Google also doesn't (as far as I know) give you a date for the photos.
This is a NASA program that is similar to Google Earth. They may have access to newer photos if you are interested (they may not too). It is a bit clunkier than Google Earth, but if you are really interested, check it out.
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
You can also look at Google Maps for newer photographs, but those might be older.

Lastly, you can check out zillow.com as they have some good photographs too (house pricing website)

Good luck!

nope.. perhaps go to your local town hall... or a local history museum if you have one..
long before i lived here or was born , it used to be a farm.
as for ariels photos from that long ago , they were probably too expensive to take, so they didn't them..
as for google earth, you can tell , there are clues.. e.g. if you knew when places were added recently
if theres not a lot of cars on the road, its probably a sunday..
my local school has a car boot sale, so saw cars in the playground, so knew it was a sunday they were taken.

Depends when the aerial photo was taken...probably less than 30 years ago...but its not a live picture...so depends when it was taken...most seem to be within the last 10years or so in major urban areas....
The original image is a satellite image and as you get nearer the ground in merges with an aerial photo taken from a plane....

Google Earth doesn't have any facility to specify a time frame for the images shown. You get the most recent image they have for the area you are looking at.

Our little place is not on Google Earth, or any of my neighbours houses.
All I can see is fields, the cottages/houses were built a long, long, long time ago.

you can try msn's virtual earth it's pictures seems to be a bit more up to date than Googles and you get quite a good angled view.
Go to http://maps.live.com/ and click on the 3d view button, you need to install a thing to make it work

If you go to your local councils website you should find aerial film that will show your home from above. I have a photo of mine with my new car outside.
