i have a cathedral ceiling so the ceiling fan is suspended from a pole as opposed to being attached directly to the ceiling, it rattles and makes a lot of noise. how can i make it stop driving me crazy? (not using it is not an option - i live in texas, it's hot!)

You need to know what, exactly, is rattling. Quite possibly it is the pull chain bouncing against the body of the fan. The fix is to wrap a bit of electrical tape where it makes contact to make it shut up.

Otherwise, if the noise if just sort of "general," you can balance the fan blades. The imbalance may be due to dust and dirt on the upper face of the blades -where you can't see it from the floor. Have a look there -and elsewhere on the motor body and get everything cleaned up. While you're there, check to see that all the screws and bolts that hold the blades to the atachment arms are secure, and tioghten 'em up.

If it STILL rattles, you can use coins to re-balance it. Do this experimentally by using a piece of duct tape to secure, say a quarter, to the upper face of any blade near the tip of the blade. Better? Or Worse? Keep fiddling around, trying different blades. Once you've found the culprit, moving the coin toward the motor body will have descrease the effective weight of the coin while in motion. Otherwise, add a nickle or dime on or near the quarter to increase the weight. You might also need to put a coin on another blade. This all takes longer to say than to do -but you get the idea.

Happy spinning!

Suspended Ceiling Fans

1) With fan "off", make certain that the fan support box and screws are tight and secure - the noise could be indicating that the fan is loose at the ceiling. Codes now require special fan support boxes to prevent the box/fan from separating from the ceiling, as serious injury can result when one falls. If you are in doubt as to the integrity at the ceiling , have a professional electrician reinstall the fan.

2) Check that the screws attaching the fan blades and box cover are secure - they can loosen over time

3) After checking these items, run the fan and check for excessive shaking. Shaking is usually due to blade imbalance - another poster has given a method of balancing fans, so I'll skip that.

In all likely hood you need to balance the fan. New fans come with kits and instructions for doing this but I'll bet that home centers sell something like it for after market. If not, try Googling ceiling fan balancing kit and I'll bet you'll find some.

It is most likely unbalanced. If you no longer have the kit that came with it, you will have to get one. The quality of the fan can also have something to do with it. We had a similar issue in our last house, balanced it, but wound up buying a top quality fan instead. No more noise.

Are they really dirty because this can cause alot of noise. Clean them and then try these out to avoid cleaning them in the future.
They work great for me, I have a similar situation

it is quite possible that it simply needs a few bolts tightened. However, if that is not the case, then the pole that is attached to the ceiling is too flimsy for the size of the ceiling fan... you may have to put in a sturdier (wider/thicker) pole to support the weight of the fan.

Just make sure that all of the nuts, bolts and screws are tightened. That should help.
