From Mexico...for simplicity of the question.
How much money does it take to come to America ?
How long does it take ?
What else if anything has to be done ?

The reason i'm posting this question, is because I constantly see people ranting about illegal immigrants...how much they hate them because they didn't use the "front door" of America. What I would like to know....how many of you actually understand what it takes to come through the front door. Do you think the front door of America is accessible to immigrants from poor countries seeking freedom ? Why or why not ?

It seems to me, people have an ill conceived notion that it's just a matter of filling out a couple forms at the US Embassy or border crossing.....

Let's get some good responses here...this is a serious question.

Bear in mind that many immigrants come from very poor areas...they live in mud huts, they do not have computers, they do not electricity, uneducated, they don't even have birth certificates

So far not a single person has answered the question....goes to show how ignorant Americans are on their own laws regarding immigration....but we expect everyone else to know them ?

At least all of you currently have the luxury of visiting a US government website to download all the forms that would be needed...yet not a single one of you have even posted that link....

Still can't see the front door from here...can you ?

So in 33 minutes i've only gotten 6 answers....and only two of them address the question directly.

I know alot of people claim to be passionate about immigration issues which is leading to draw one of two conclusions....

1. I asked a question that was too hard...and people do not have enough information to answer it directly.

or

2. It's not as big of an issue as I thought, and nobody REALLY cares as much as they pretend to.

i'm leaning towards conclusion number 1. as of now.

It costs about several thousand dollars with a waiting period of between 7 and 13 years to legally become a US citizen. And all of this is for a chance, many are denied, and they don't care about keeping families together when they go through this process.

Yeah, the front door could be a little wider, a little cheaper and a little more inviting. Then people might have a real reason to complain that millions are coming here illegally.

I don't know how exactly people become legal citizens but, I know it is very hard and people in this country act like it is as easy as filling out forms and stuff. I don't care about the illegal immigrants in this country because they are doing lower class jobs and Americans usually have good jobs that pay good money. I think they should get citizenship.

You wanted to use "Mexicans - for simplicity of the question"
So lets first of all, drop the "seeking freedom" argument. The Mexican "immigrants" aren't here looking for "freedom", they're here to take our resources.

As far as coming from poor areas, not having computers, etc:
That is not the problem of the US taxpayer - that is a problem for the Mexican people & government. We have no obligation or interest in solving Mexico's vast problems. We have enough of our own.
And no, Mexicans don't qualify as refugees because they don't have computers and birth certificates.
What an insult to true refugees - like the people in Darfur, who are suffering terribly.

Americans are not anti-immigrant. We just want the immigrants who come here to demonstrate respect, affection, and admiration for this beautiful country - to learn the language, to obey the laws of the land, to contribute rather than take.

The front door if you will is the proper way to enter. Visas etc. If you want to come in to my house, come in through the front door as an invited guest, don't climb in the window.

It is unfortunate that some countries treat their citizens as you describe. However, the US is not the welfare department for other countries.

I hear all the time that they are "doing jobs Americans wont do". That's BS. They are doing jobs that Americans would do if they were paid a fair wage. if we legalize the illegals that are currently here, who is going to work the underpaying, less than minimum wage jobs they are filling?

WE HATE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE TURNING US INTO A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND DESTROYING THE MIDDLE CLASS BY DRIVING WAGES DOWN.

WE CAN'T TAKE IN EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD. IT JUST CAN'T BE DONE. WE ARE ALREADY OVERCROWDED.
