Thats SO UNTRUE. Tell your mom times have changed!!! You should show your mom these answers too =) Thats how I get my parents to change perspectives once in a while on valid arguments.
Many think that cheerleaders are just "easy", mean, and backstabbing. That may be true for some select schools, but nationwide cheerleading is a REAL sport and they work together as a sport, not a group of air head and care-free girls. ONLY if cheerleading at your school is stable and is taken seriously, then you will have no problems.
Therefore, go to tryouts with your best smile, a great attitude, and love what you do!!!!! Also let your mother know that this will be a great choice for you and will make you happy. She can always go to the coach if she has any questions!!!
EDIT: As you see the dim-witted people above dont know what theyre talking about. YOU CAN get scholarships for cheerleading, mostly at an all-star level, though. If you are not engaged with anything else besides your studies. why not?
Major universities off the top of my head have granted many cheerleading scholarships: University of Maryland, Duke, and Boston College.
I suggest you and your mother together lookup cheerleading/college cheerleading. You will REALLY be suprised. Go to youtube if you must

I think only the slutty cheerleaders have bad reps. If you are a good person, then you are a good person that is also a cheerleader. I believe that when taken seriously it is a very athletic sport. Show your mom some of those professional cheerleaders performing on TV. These girls take cheerleading so seriously that they don't have time for anything else. Your rep is what you choose to make it. I believe it would be unfair to stereotype all cheerleaders as having bad reps.

Your mother has your best interests at heart. At many schools, cheerleaders are squeeze toys for the athletes. Being a cheerleader doesn't help you in later life. It won't help you get a job or get you into a good college. At class reunions, former cheerleaders sometimes get teased and laughed at, like they did something wrong, which they didn't.
There's plenty of other school activities where you won't have to put on a skimpy outfit and be a live Barbie Doll. Focus on being the best student you can be. That's always a great accomplishment.

I think that as long as you keep your morals high and
don't get involved with the cheerleaders who have a bad
reputation, then it should not affect you.
Use your own head and don't get influenced by others and
you can change how others perceive cheerleaders (if they are
considered to have a bad rep.)

Not all cheerleaders are like the stereotypical ones that do things that would make people think poorly of them. I think what our mom is really saying is that she doesn't trust you to make good decisions. That is what you must convince her of.

I do not agree with your mother. In my school, the cheerleaders were among the best and most interesting students.
