To all the dittohead cons who think it's because of abortion or gay marriage, go read about the election of 1964. These were not the issues back then.

In 1964, the Republican Party could have nominated pro-civil rights liberal Republican Nelson Rockefeller for president. Instead, they nominated conservative Republican Barry Goldwater who was against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Democrats ran liberal Democrat LBJ.

Guess which side the South voted for?

Ever since then, the CONFEDERATE South has become increasingly more Republican while the yankee Northeast has become more Democrat.

big momma,

The south (both white and black) liked liberal Democrats like FDR and LBJ for the longest time because of their economic programs.

White social conservatives however started jumping ship when the national Democratic Party started supporting civil rights. They first jumped ship in 1948 with the Dixiecrat Party and then in 1964 by voting for Republicans instead.

It was Southerners who provided the bulk of the
leaders during the American Revolution. The key military victories that determined
the outcome of the Revolution were in the South. Southerners were the key figures
in designing our form of government and the political philosophies that guided the
union of American states through its early days. It was again Southerners who
stood up for liberty during the War for Southern Independence, keeping faith with
the ideals of their colonial forefathers. Throughout American history, it has been
Southerners who have offered their sons disproportionately in defense of American
liberty and sovereignty. Throughout our American history, it has been Southerners
who have suffered the most not only physically and materially, but politically at
the hands of the rest of America. Still today the South provides a disproportionate
number of her sons and daughters to the U.S. military, even as anti-Southern
bigotry continues to grow in the rest of America. Why would Southerners continue
to be so ‘patriotic’ towards America when the rest of America is so anti-South?

How is it that the Southern people can be repeatedly insulted and figuratively
slapped in the face, yet still clearly be the most patriotic region of America? The
South, the ‘lifeboat of America,’ is under near constant attack while Southerners
are doing battle on behalf of the very government that endorses the attacks on
Dixie. It is in the South where people more often than not still stand at parades
when the American flag goes by. It is in Dixie that more hats are taken off when
the national anthem is played. The South is overwhelmingly traditionalist in its
religious, political and social views as a whole. And all the while it faces a barrage
of insults from the leftist media and entertainment industry, not to mention the
federal government’s various arms and the political activists that activate them.
The South isn’t just the Bible Belt, it’s the ‘Patriot Belt’ of America. So why is it
that while Southerners offer such respect to America, the rest of America cannot
reciprocate that respect?

LBJ was a Texas candidate and I believe both Kennedy and LBJ took Texas. Texas is still a southern state, right?

According to this map the South was divided in 1964 60% Democrat 40% Republican

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._presidential_election,_1964

EDIT: I looked at the 60, 64, and 68 elections and can't find anything to back up your claim. In 1972 the South was for a Republican but 98% of the electorial college went to a Republican does that mean all of America was raciest? I just cant find any facts to back your claim.

EDIT2: I researched every election until Bush Jr.. It seems that a vast majority of the states voted the same way until 92 when Clinton ran for president. You should do a little more research before you make claims like this!

EDIT: Just read your responce to me. No, you are wrong the maps and electorial info do not support your statments.

I wasn't aware of the South as a whole being more Republican than Democrat. (I live in TN and am a consertive republican while most of my friends tend to be liberal Democrat. Needles to say, we do not talk politics.)

Some southern communities are more liberal than others. Residents of Kingport, TN often complain that the residents of Johnson City, TN are too liberal.

As a white female, I was once condemned by an white male in Alabama for holding the door open for an African American male when he came out of a convenience store with his arms full. He felt, "No woman should open the door for any man even if his hands are full and No white person should open the door for a black person." Of course racism there seemed to be both ways.

While in Alabama, I witnessed some African Americans that were more racist than their Northern Cousins. While at a hotel swimming pool, I over heard an African American maid say, "I hate all white people because they are nasty and none deserve to live."

If what you say is true and I'm not saying that it is not, it may have to do with more industry towns being located up north. Since factories are usually unionized and unions tend to support the liberal/democratic view, people from the North would be more likely to vote for politicians that would give them job security.

it truly is the conservative values. previously, those was once the values of the Democratic occasion. at that factor, the south continually voted Democratic. As time has long gone on, the Democratic occasion has exchange into too liberal, too left-leaning for many southern human beings to abdomen. it truly is using the fact human beings interior the south have self assurance in taking care of their own employer, dislike intervention via government, and are fiercely proud of their background, issues the Democratic occasion has abandoned. I come from a kin who continually voted Democratic. This election, i'm going to vote the 1st Republican pollever solid in my kin's background. Edit: Jamesmom, i'm hoping you're no longer proscribing your newborn's intelligence via your own.

To be honest? The South were Democrats for the longest time until Kennedy and the Civil Rights Movement when they felt betrayed by their party.

Also, the Bible belt is predominantly in the South and their issues of abortion and gay-rights fall more in line with the Republican party.

The South is also the home of the Bible Belt. And in increasing numbers, right wing conservatives are also members of Christian Churches who want to "bring back family values" and have been told by their preachers to start voting republican and pushing their leaders to back pro-life and to ban gay marriage.

The south is very religious and think that gay marriage and abortion are very important. Back in the 1960s, the South was poorer, blacker and more Democratic, which is why they liked LBJ.

well.. actually in state government we are much more likely to vote for a Democrat than a Republican in many Southern States.. it's in the National elections they are much more likely to vote Republican on.

In today's world.. this is mainly due to social issues such as stem cell research and also Gun Control.

Because the south consists mostly of blue collar workers who work extremely hard for their income, they don't want to give away what they slaved to earn. Metropolitan areas such as the northeast and west coast have large cities where there is a greater poverty rate. They vote blue because the libs are the ones that reward them (free hand outs) for smoking crack and doing nothing.

Strange. I came down here from the northeast and had registered as a Republican long before I moved down south. :) Have you ever really seen a map of where that red is? I'm not talking about just states, I'm talking about rural areas all over the U.S. :) Get over your racist kick and badgering, you're giving yourself away.
