I also really want to become an astronaut. If you want to pilot or command the shuttle, which is what I want to do, plan on being an officer in the military, Navy or Airforce. If you want to be a mission specialist, then you should study lots of math and science and get at least a masters in engineering. Most mission specialists are officers in the military, so if I were you I would plan on being in the military. The way I plan to go is going to the United States Air Force Academy and majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Then if my grades are good enough, I hope to get into pilot training school. Eventually I will apply to the astronaut corps. Right now, I'm working on my pilots license so I will know how to fly when I go to the academy. Just try to get an early start and you will be fine.

The advice I would give to you is, follow your dreams and don't let anyone steer you away. If someone tells you that you can't do something, take that and show them wrong. Be willing to pursue your dreams. Dreams can come true, but recognize the fact that you are going to pursue your dream, that means that you're going to have to work hard. The dream is not going to be given to you. There are going to be many ups and downs. So if you really want to see something come true and you really want to be able to do something in your life, you have to accept the responsibility of working hard to acheive it. Good luck and hey, maybe someday we will work together at NASA!

"For once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been and there you will always long to return."- Leanardo da Vinci

In general, astronauts are over-achievers. They excel in mathematics, physics, and the sciences. Almost all are pilots. Most have military backgrounds, although that is starting to change. If you truly have an interest, learn airplanes - doesn't matter if you intend to go into the military or not. Be prepared to get your Masters, and possibly a Ph.D. as well. Write NASA - they'll be glad to tell you what they're looking for - and keep up frequent contact with them.

Study hard at all the math and science classes you can get. NASA only takes the best people into the astronaut program. You'll need an advanced degree in a program that they need, such as aerospace engineering, space medicine, etc. I'd go to the NASA website and search for the astronaut program, and see if they list specific degrees or talents that they are looking for.

Being an astronaut requires strong thinking skills and peak physical conditioning. You will need a degree in something scientific, like physics or chemistry, and you will also have to be in good shape. Go to NASA's website and read the bios of some of its astronauts to get an idea of what they did to get where they are.

I definetly agree with the math and science answers. Keep in mind that there are two basic types of people that get into spaceflight programs: flight crews and technical specialists.

Flight crew are almost exclusively pilots, with experience in high performance, jet aircraft. Just about the only place that provides training and experience in these vehicles is the military. Engineering and science degrees help these guys get into the space program.

The technical specialists come from all kinds on industries. But, to get into the space program, they have to demonstrate that they are the "best of the best." Again, degrees and even multiple degrees are the ones that get chosen to fly in space.

At your age, read as much as you can and do as well as you can so you can get into top classes in high school. From there, you have to excel so you have the best options for higher education. I wouldn't worry too much about the distant future, though. Just do as well as you can in school right now so you can take the next step. Things will work out if you do your best at each step. You will figure out the next move when you need to.
