How do I be like AOL ??
and get my own internet connection so I don't have to pay them - I really know nothing about networking --can someone help me understand how or why I cannot?

If you don't want to pay for internet just search for 'free internet' in a search engine. They generate ads in your browser to keep it free. I wouldn't recommend them though.

It is not all that difficult to do what you describe. It takes determination, time, and money.
First, get a B.S. in Computer Science from a major University. Then get an MBA from a stelllar Business School. You now understand the two critical issues, the technical needs for the business and how to operate a business.
Armed with this knowledge, you then proceed to purchase, acquire, merge, gather, lease, etc the hardware, the telecommunications, the software, the personnel, and the customers to do the job.
Your capital expenses are in the millions if not tens of millions so you are best served if you have a very rich uncle who is generous.
You question is a classic. You admit you know nothing about the objective but you want to avoid paying someone else for service. Life just does not work that way.

You don't own the phone lines my friend.
I've heard of an Asian group that was able to hack a phone system and they were selling subscriptions using the phone company's lines. I heard about it because they're all in jail now.
