Why is Pink Floyd so popular?

They never sold out and betrayed their underground following..they stuck to their thematic and psychedelic style to this very day..mainstream people and generations came to them...instead of them to us...when it comes down to it, it's only "Us and Them"! Many of the replies here are very true. But scanning through the years from their first big hit album, Dark Side of the Moon, to their mega hit "The Wall" they are of an era when certain rock bands somehow captured "magic" within the music of their songs. There are woefully few new bands that have any magic whatsoever in their songs. Magic is what propels a song into mega popularity, it's what keeps people listening thirty, forty years later. It's what makes a person feel good while listening; It's elusive; even artists who once were able to capture "magic," can't always do it again.
And, Pink Floyd was there while many baby boomers were "expanding" their minds, lol. The way of thinking and open mindness which people have today, wasn't always around. And, as cool as that was, there is more...
I was in the Army in West Germany when "The Wall" came out, it was unbelievably popular and it was used as an anthem of freedom leading up to, and during the fall of the REAL wall. Sort of a soundtrack of real life unfolding. That album, and it's timing, really solidified their place in music history.

Because they made music for people that listen and for people with high expectations. AND because a higher force has put them together. Its because theire on a higher ground. They could even be more populär if Roger hadend blown it. I love him, but what he did with Richard? Imagine theire music without Richard, it would lose theire magic (pompeii etc etc etc.) I get angry when I think of it, but I forgive him. I think he has grown. His music is also remarkable (acomplished by his exelent musicians).
But like all the good musicians die, here died the whole band. The world couldent bare the popularity they would have if they`d be still together.
There are people who don`t like pink floyd, for me its an honer not to belong to them.

Pink Floyd is popular because there music spans so many genres including rock jazz and psychedelic rock. Because of this they appeal to many people there lyrics are deep and philosophical and they have an excellent guitar player to back this. There stage shows were also very elaborate and attracted many people. Also, they rock.

Seriously, though, they have a very ecletic sound. Comfortably Numb is so lonely and helpless, yet Another Brick in the Wall is so full of attitude and angst. I think they appeal to a wide rock audience from easy listeners to those that enjoy classic hard rock.

they are popular, becuase if you really listen to them, you hear a story, which is very hard for artists to do today. Also, while listening to them, in a dark and comfortable room, it's like a natural high it takes you to a place that you thought never existed in your mind. I love all of their albums. Also, their use of lyrics and guitars is so profound, there cannot be anybody, that can even try to duplicate.

Why is... why is... have you ever picked up any of their albums? They're amazing! They WRITE their own music, it has a MEANING, and it has a pleasing melody played by real INSTRUMENTS. What, are you listening to pop and hip hop or something?

These guys helped pave the road from Elvis rock and roll to Nirvana rock and roll! They're my number one favorite band!
