It is not an amythyst or an opal. It's a purple stone that changes to blue or red, and sometimes has flecks of green in it. I have a ring like that, but I can't think of the name of the stone. Any gemologists or jewelers out there?

It really is best if you have a photo to show us. (If you do, drop me a message on my 360). But from what you've described, I suspect you may have either a Topaz that has been coated to produce this sort of effect (trade name - Mystic Topaz) or a synthetic color change Corundum (Sapphire).

Mystic Topaz is essentially colorless Topaz that has been given a coating to produce an iridescent effect. This is very similar to some lead crystal glass beads or stones you may have seen in the craft shops. Mystic Topaz can come in any color depending on the coating given. Although most stones are coated on the pavilion (base) of the stone, some are also coated on the table. Some of the better produced stones (such as Azotic TM) are durable and will resist scratching. Others will not and the coating may come off with a light scratch from a blade or even a needle.

Synthetic color change Sapphires are typically a deep green color that changes to purple and red under incandescent (yellow) lighting. They were meant to simulate Alexandrite. If the stone is not cut in the proper direction, some "bleeding" of color will occur. i.e. you may see all three colors at one time.

Hope that helps!

your eyes appear to change colors depending on the size of your pupils. If they are smaller, you can see more or the colored part of your eye (the iris), thus making them look lighter or brighter. if your pupils are large, the colored part you see is smaller and giving your eyes an overall darker appearance. Also, the iris's of your eyes are translucent, light passes through them much like it does a marble so yes, if the light is shining through them they will appear ligher ..almost illuminated. pretty anyway

Is it mystic topaz? It has a blue-purpley tone but changes colors like an opal.

Edit-
Here's an example of what a mystic topaz looks like (in certain light of course)
