it might be being transferred through the cage, so have her wash her hands after touch anything in contact with them (or dont let her touch them)

im not sure about the symptoms, but im fairly sure its like food poisoning, so that could be it...

on average, people have a better chance of getting samonella through food that isnt properly cleaned/cooked than through turtles

turtle are wonderful animals, so dont let the risk of samonella scare you away from your new pets... for more info about pet turtles in general, visit allturtles.com... it is an amazing website with and awesome forum and some great caresheets...

best of luck!

Salmonella germs cause a disease called Salmonellosis in humans. The disease takes a few hours to a few days to show up, and lasts one to three days. The main symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Also called 'stomach flu' or the '24 hour bug', it is most often gotten from food that is contaminated by improper storage, handling, or cooking. Cold cooked chicken and eggs are common sources.

The disease can be dangerous to the very young or old- mostly because of the risk of dehydration. A baby died of turtle-borne Salmonellosis recently- and about 400 people a year die from other forms of the disease.

Turtles are a special risk because they live in water contaminated by their own feces. The turtle, any puddles it makes, and the tank water are contaminated. Hand washing and good sanitation are usually enough to battle the rather easily killed germs.

Turtle water is a big risk (as is fish water, etc.), but any animal that comes in contact with its own feces is a risk as well.

Now, normally, the risk of a fairly minor thing like Salmonellosis (most of us get a case every year or two) that is so easily avoidable is not a big deal, but young children change the risk picture.

It could be a simple virus or salmonella . There is no way to tell other than taking her to the doctor and have her tested for salmonella .The symptoms are pretty much the same . So do not take any chances with your daughters health .

Becky B has a great answer. not all turtles carry salmonella, yet devoid of high priced exams, there is no thank you to understand for advantageous, so basically wash your palms nicely. Turtles below 4 inches are not to any extent further probable to hold salmonella than greater advantageous turtles, so basically as Becky B stated, persons are misinformed. the full 4 inch concern refers back to the regulation making turtles below 4 inches unlawful to sell. the federal government got here up with this actual length because of the fact they felt it coated all the newborn turtles that have been being offered, not because of the fact they are greater probable to hold salmonella than greater advantageous turtles.
