I bought some cute coasters in hopes of avoiding water rings on my furniture. It makes sense that the cute side goes up but I thought the cork side should go up to absorb the water. A friend told me the cork side goes down to prevent the coaster from sliding around or scratching the furniture surface. How are they used?

Cork does not absorb water. Thats why old fishing bobbers were made of cork. Your friend is correct.

your friend is right the cork side goes down. You know this bc some coasters only have cork as a backing and the pic is only on 1 side. the material on the top side is likely such that it won't be ruined by water.

I wear glasses sometimes and I would recommend putting them in their case or a bag of some sort before going on any roller coasters. I would hate for them to fall off your face, I know I would be mad!
