Not legally but yes morally every one is supposed to inform the police of any criminal incidence or activity. There is no law that binds the all person to go and inform the police any illegal incidence or crime but if such a person is interrogated by the police regarding this crime & the person knowingly fails or refuse to give any information about this to the interrogating police officer or gives wrong information to the said officer or refuse to take oath or affirmation to this officer if he is supposed to do so or refuse to sign his statement when required to sing it, then definitely such a person gets covered under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code section 177,178,179,180. If such person is legally bound to inform the police about this crime fails to do so can be held liable under section 176 of IPC.

Yes!! It could be punishable by law for obstructing Justice. If you know information about a crime, please let the authorities be aware. the consequences' of not doing so are worse !! Do the right, moral thing. You'll feel relieved in doing so !! You can always do it anonymously just to put the investigation on the right track. Why should an innocent be wrongly accused? Can you live with yourself in knowing the truth??

There is a common law crime, known as misprision of felony. It is a crime not to report a felony if you are the victim and you know you who the perp is. India, as a common law country, almost certainly has this concept in its law. But there is no obligation to serve as eyes and ears for the police generally.

I dont know the laws in India ,but I do know that within most of us we would feel bad if we had to witness criminal activity with no way tosomehow right the perceived wrong. I would check with someone in authority where you are to see if there are legal ramifications to being quite. Best of luck
