The Baltimore Orioles.
Then they were the Noo Yawk Highlanders for a few seasons.

Chipmaker is right. The question asked for their name BEFORE 1903. They were founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the current Baltimore Orioles, who moved to Baltimore from St. Louis in 1954) They didnt become the Highlanders until 1903 when they moved to New York.

They started as the Baltimore Orioles, moved to NYC after the 1902 season, and played at Hilltop Park.
Being that it was on a hilltop, they were they Highlanders.
The press didn't care for the name and started calling them the Americans, easier to print than Highlanders.
Being that the Boston franchise was already the Boston Americans, they came up with Yankees in 1910.
The franchise officially took the nickname as the name of the team and as of 1913, they were the NY Yankees, which is also the first season they played out of Hilltop Park, (so they were no longer "Highlanders"...)
