jeez where do you start mmmh ok here is a list of the over rated and underrated drivers -
over rated -
Kimi - Quick but not technical at all
Lewis - Nice bloke but come on he has JUST done half a season and anyone could drive that McLaren, its more about the car being good rather than him
Rubinho - Ferrari made him look good (and im a big Scuderia Fan), Honda proves he is just a number 2 and no more
DC - Gave Hakkinen the shot at two titles when he was in power at McLaren - Melbourne 1998 said it all, also rand and always will be
Webs - What is the point of this guy apart from being a marketing gimmick because he represents a different part of the world because he is an Aussie and F1 is a world sport and apart from once in a blue moon qualifying his Jaguar second what has he done? s*** all he chose Williams over Reanult in 2005 says it all
Ralf - Lives off being a Schumacher, poor driver
Sato - Exactely like Webber (but the Japanese version)
Underrated -
Massa - Classy competent driver, eroded his mistakes in the past under the guidance of MSC last year, now a very capable driver and world champion material
Alonso - plays the percentages too much for me but does have loads of balls and when required can race but saldy doesnt do it enough in my view but every one is different
Heidfeld - Quick Nick always been underrated Nick who should have gone to Mclaren instead of Kimi in 2002 when Kimi and Nick were both at Sauber in 2001
JB - Textbook classy driver but only ever had one good car in his whole time in F1 and took 10 podiums that year in the BAR in 2004, guy has loads of ability just needs Honda to get a rocket up its bum and he is a world champion in waiting
The rest are all in it for the money or just becasue they have good sponsers

I think both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton are both overrated because all u hear is about the rivalry between the 2 and all the garbage that's being talked about them (it's really getting old). Yes, both are competitive drivers, but come on! There are other drivers that should be talked about as well; the sport doesn't consist of just 2 drivers! As far as underrated driver(s), it would probably have to be Felipe Massa, Nick Heidfeld, Robert Kubica, David Coulthard, and Takuma Sato. Reason for being is because throughout the season so far, each driver has put on a performance that noone has ever thought that they can do. Personally, I would have to say that not only those drivers that I listed are underrated, but all those, except Mclaren, are underrated and that's wrong!

Nice question, like it! I'd say that Button is overrated, particurlaly in the UK. He hasn't done much by way of achieving consistent performances, let alone challenge for victories. Despite this, he always seems to be described as a dark horse, but I don't think so. Ralf Schumacher is rated very highly because of his surname, and he's a good driver, but nothing spectacular.
As for the most underrated driver, I think there are a few contenders. Kubica is great to watch, and a possible GP winner next year if not this year. And of course Coulthard - I'm not a big DC fan but I still think that if he had reached turn one before Hakkinen in Melbourne 1998, he would have won the championship that year (if you watched that season you'll probably know what I'm talking about). But my vote for the most underrated driver goes to Raikkonen!! Plenty of people are criticising him for not being technically-minded or being too laid back and perhaps even not fully committed to getting the most out of the car. But keep watching him, he's going to silence the critics before the season is out.

I think one thing we all should recognize is that a driver being labeled as "overrated" is not in and of itself a put-down. No questions asked, anyone who can successfully pilot an F1 vehicle around the track for 55+ laps is worth his/her salt. Of course the question was, "who is the most overrated f1 driver in today line up and who is the most underrated?", so here's my feeling:
Overrated: Looking at the field, the potential, the results, and just raw emotion, I'd have to say, most overrated, on merit of press coverage, is Lewis (and I am a fan). Hamilton, no doubt is a phenomenal driver, rookie or not, McLaren F1 or not (look at his track record from karting through GP2). But, the press needs to wean themselves off Lewis for a moment and focus on the achievements of all in the sport.
Underrated: Looking at the field, the potential, the results, and just raw emotion, I'd have to say, most underrated is definitely Kubica. Gearbox failure took him out of Australia, Malaysia notwithstanding, sixth in Bahrain, fourth in Spain, fifth in Monaco, we all know what happened in Canada which took him out of Indi, then back to fourth in France, and again fourth in Silverstone. To come back from the single most violent crash in F1 history (over 75G of energy into the wall), and place fourth in France! That's talent. Kubica has also been very consistent this season, he's Lewis' good mate, and is the same age as Lewis. If BMW sorts out all their mechanical issues, Kubica would really be in the contention for Driver's points. He's sixth in the points in spite of retirements in Australia and Canada, and he's unquestionably not a quitter.
That's my feeling.

I enjoyed reading some of the previous responses...funny stuff. Anyway, in my opinion the most overrated has to be Hamilton. He has walked into a dream situation with one of the best cars on grid similar to that crybaby Jacques Villenueve in 1996. Also, he is the golden boy for Ron Dennis and therefore has as much if not more team support than Alonso (and no I'm not an Alonso fan). Hamilton obviously has immense potential but to me he is currently way overrated. Kubica is the most underrated. Give Kubica the keys to a McLaren or Ferrari and he would be points leader and WC. This is off topic but here are some additional comments by me:
1. Why can't Alonso stop waiving his fist and just drive the darn car. I mean jiminy Christmas...get on with it already Alonso!
2. Raikkonen should be relegated to playing video games rather than driving real cars. He has provided no technical input for improving the car. Maybe Ferrari should hire MSC to perform all the test sessions.
3. Poor old Massa is often quick but doesn't seem to understand the game so to speak. He reminds me of Montoya - a guy that shows flashes of brilliance but something always goes wrong. Maybe in Massa's case it seems like he has to go out and prove himself all the time but inevitably mental mistakes kill him.
4. Why doesn't DC retire already? He's a nice guy but he showed in 2001 that he isn't WC material so he should give it up.

I think that Ralf Schumacher is probably the most overrated - before the season started he was quoted as saying he's "one of the top 3 drivers in Formula 1" or something to that effect. To his credit, his family ties set the bar high for him, so he's kind of destined to come up short.
The most underrated driver would probably be Adrian Sutil. I've heard a lot of good things about him, but he's not in a very good car to show his skills. Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica are also good choices.

I think the most overrated driver would have to be alonso because whenever he wins a race its always the two time champion won. And it dosn't matter if he won before its just if hes winning now thats important.
I think the most underrated would have to be Hamilton. The reason why they always talk about him is because he is really good and when ever they say hes good they are just stating the facts. And he does always win and thats a fact.

I believe the most over rated star in formula one has to be Raikkonen, he just does not have what it takes to be world champion and i will be superised if he ever is to be honest. He makes too many errors and is not consistant enough and to refuse the help of the best ever formula 1 driver in shumacher because of pride is riduculous.
The most underrated driver i believe would have to be his team mate in Massa who has gone from strengh to strengh this season and unlike raikkonen is willing to get tips from shumacher and you can seee the improvement in him for it and he has come along way since last year. He is a calm and collected driver and all more consitent than people realise. I believe he will post the major threat to the mclarens this season.
But like i say this are just my opinions. Also i am not suprised one bit by Hamiltons achievements this season, people tend to forget that he has been with Mclaren since he was 11 and has had the best chance of any rookie ever in the sport, since he has known the workings of the team for years.

I'll go with Hamilton for both!
Overrated because he doesn't have the history to backup his media coverage.
Underrated because so many haters refuse to give the man credit for starting a career with 9 and counting consecutive podiums!
People say "its all the car" well look at him compared to a two time champion who drives the same car! IN 5 out of 9 races so far Hamilton has beat Alanso!
By reading the other posts I rest my case!
