I wonder why you have restricted this to the UK?
However you have asked for opinions , here is mine.
Islam, Muslims, mean to me that here we have another religion, all differing groups within, differing in the same way that Christians differ within their own religion.
And now I come to think of it it differing in the same way that all other religions differ within each other!
Any one care to debate that point? They do indeed all differ.
Now what should pop into peoples minds on hearing 'Islam and Muslim' is terrorists etc etc. Why is that ?
Because they have read the newspapers !!
I could write a book on the differnces within any religion, but who would be interested in that?
No one!
Just about every one in the UK (and the rest of the world) have made up their minds what 'Islam and Muslim', really means how could little old me ever change that? No way!
BTW I am atheist!
It would be interesting to ask " What do people think when they hear some one is atheist"?
I would ask myself, but being a really clever feller, I actually know what the answers would be from the majority.
Good luck with your poll, but I fail to understand why you have restricted this to the UK , what difference does our opinion make?
While I was 'plonking' this answer ou, and posted it I saw your comments.
Now belive it or not, I was actually selling the IRA newspapers on the streets in the Midlands UK around the time of the Birmingham bombings, so I wasnt a very 'popular chappie'! I'm not Irish either !
I knew then as I know now the difference between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians and what it all meant , I also had a good idea what it would be like to have the likes of the British army supporting one side against the other, and taking over a lump of the country!
I hope that has alll finished now, or soon will be!
I do fail to see your point, I just cant see the comparisant between the two things? Bombing mosques, why?
Do you really think all Muslims are terrorists?
No since reading your comments you have lost me!

Islam stems from the Arabic word for submission, as does Muslim. The concept being that Islam, the religion or even the people of that religion, have submitted to God, Islam being Submission to God's Will - Muslim is then the word meaning one who has submitted to God - or to God's Will,
It has nothing to do with peace or violence. It is purely a description of the most basic tenet of their belief as expressed in the Qoran. In its extreme interpretation it would certainly not allow any freedom of thought or differentiation of opinion societally - it is certainly not a democratic concept - any more than fundamental Christianity allows true democracy.
If you make a comparison between radical fundamental Muslims, or right wing Christians, specifically neocons - there is not much to differentiate between them.
On the other hand, there is now a retro-style Pope in Rome, so maybe we are heading down the same restrictive path if we are non-Muslims any way!

Because it ISN'T. The LITERALY Arabic translation of "jihad" is "struggle". "Holy war" is "Harb muqaddasah". Notice the linguistic difference. Holy war CAN be a part of jihad but only counts if it's in DEFENCE to someone else trying to destroy Islam and kill all the Muslims. But Jihad does not MEAN "holy war". It can INCLUDE it if there is absolutely no other alternative. And lesser jihad is an outward physical struggle. If someone throws trash at me, it's physical. Internal is controlling your own desires. Some of those hadiths taken out of context and written in news articles by people who don't know can really be confusing.

Hello,
(ANS) Although I am an atheist I still really fear for ordinary moderate Muslims in this country. Why? because although Islam may not make any sense to me personally I do believe that we should all have the freedom & right to believe what we choose.
**I'm certain that at its core Islam continues to be a peaceful, non violent religion concerned with the promotion of care, compassion & kindness. The reason I am afraid for moderate Muslims is because of what is being done in the name of their religion. The extremists & terrorists have perverted Islam and bent it out of all previous recognition.
**Terrorism, & the perversion of Islam by religious mad men is NOT Islam.
**I DON'T want to walk down the street and be afraid of very Muslim I meet or might meet. I don't want to end up with Islam-a-phobia but that seems were we are going given current events.
**It must be awful being an ordinary Muslim in this country because of the suspicion and fear caused by terrorism. I have nothing against others who wish to follow their religion in a non violent way.
**The Islamic extremists & fundamentalists are DOOMED to failure in there attempts at a global Jihad because you cannot bomb people into agreement with your beliefs. What are Al Quada going too do kill all humans? if you follow this logic then the human race faces annihilation.
Further there will be (if not already) a backlash of monumental scale across every continent, every country, every community, every street in every town, city and village against Al Quada and terrorism. There will reach a point when even moderate Muslims are totally against these sickening attacks and killing. That day cannot come to soon for my liking.
**I don't know what the answer or solution to Islamic based terrorism is but I don't think killing extremists will work either. Killing terrorists who are prepared to die anyway is only lowering ourselves down to the awful level. We lower our own humanity if we do that. Its an extremely awful paradoxical situation but I know Islam is NOT the problem itself.
The problem "is with the perverted beliefs" of the extremists, and in the cold calculated acts they are prepared to perform given their distorted ideas.

Islam is the religion that comes after Christianity. it calls for peace tolerance of others and belief in one God, the God that both Jews and Christians believe in.
Muslim is the person who follows this religion, however nowadays many are Muslims by name, and others (extremists) twist Islam in a way to kill and do what Islam does not say so that they can do what they want. Muslims are humans, and some may be bad, Islam is a religion- and IF followed CORRECTLY is a perfect way of life and after

i am not surprised to see that so many ignorant people have answered your question . Islam and Muslims are words used buy government controlled media in negative and bias ways to put fear and hate in to people so that they are scared and give there freedom and more power to the government . anybody with half a brain knows that 911 was a inside job and blamed on the Muslims so greedy corporations can have an excuse to invade other countries and steal there wealth and the same people in governments who also own arm's and building companies make millions from creating these wars. Muslims are just victims in this propaganda.
