In a human mind, time to non living things is applicable because we see metals rust and food mold and fires die. But to say that they know what time is is preposterous because they don't live. I don't think that plants having any knowledge of time either, they grow and they die. I think that it's impossible to not to follow time because then, even if time is an illusion, we would be at a stand-still because our movement through our understanding of time keeps us going. But I honestly believe that we can't answer these questions until we find out what time really is.

A non-living non-thing is exactly that perceived non-thing that persists and allows perception. It is beyond-the-physical. Note also that many thinkers will fail to give the slightest consideration to the difficult, and yet comprehensible, present participle, "-ing". How do we perceive a non-thing? First, forget all the Cartesian nonsense they shoved down your throat in prep school and study Aristotle diligently for about five years. After doing so, you may be able to understand that there is no compulsory mechanical schema, after all, for any, some, or every [th]-ing.

Now, let us consider time and not confuse it with universal history. Our modern puffed-up assumption that we are achieiving something valuable through applied sciences is actually blocking our efforts to understand the past, a fundamental component of time. Woe betide he who neglects the past. Our present pleasure of wonder is sufficient transport through time--except for the bourgeois, who will suspend that pleasure for future profit. What, after all, he asks, can be gained by examining other's (past) treasures? And why knock the bourgeois when he is all-to-ready to supply us with the approach to life we consumers demand?

Do non-living things know what time is? Of course not-- they don't "know" anything, as knowledge (and consciousness) belong solely to the living.

Is it possible to ignore time in this world? You can try, but I doubt you'll get very far-- time is so intertwined with perception that it is almost impossible to imagine a state of ignorance vis-a-vis temporality.

If we don't follow time what will happen? We don't have to "follow time"-- we are embedded within it.

As for your final question, I'm afraid I can't make enough sense out of it to attempt answering.

Time is applicable to everything. All things decay. The slowest decaying thing we know of is the neutron. So far, they haven't found a decayed one. Something in the order of a billion neutrons should decay in about 12 billion years, but a billion neutrons in all of the universe is worse than the proverbial needle in a haystack.

I don't understand what you mean. If we ignore time, does that mean not understanding when it's time to wake up? When it's time to harvest? Really and truly ignoring time would have us dead quite soon.

If you mean not paying attention to clocks or having years numbered, then we'd still get along just fine. But in a more primitive state.

NOW is the only time applicable.
We human separate time from past-present-future, but that difference is made by our thinking.
The only truthful time is NOW, which is same as ETERNITY...
If you cannot accept what I'm saying, try to focus on now instead of what happened one second ago or what would happen one second later. Wow... it can be so difficult if you never tried before, but welcome to the world of meditation!
