I don't see many homeless people where I live now, but when I lived in New York I'd give them fruit. An apple or an orange, usually. NEVER cash.
I was in St. Louis once when I was six months pregnant and a man sidled up to me and asked me if I could spare some money. I looked at him in disbelief-- he was dressed better than I was, in a nice jacket with neatly braided hair-- and said, "I'm six months pregnant and about to be a single parent, what makes you think I'm better off than you are?" He left pretty quickly.
There's a program here that some churches participate in called "scrip," or something similar. You can give a truly needy person these certificates that can only be exchanged for food/necessities and absolutely can't be exchanged for cash or used for drugs or alcohol.

Never cash but i do want to stop with some food & water for them...lol,the job application is a nice touch though. I live in a small town and don't see too many homless except for while i'm at work which is at a truck stop and they all come into the parking lot to try to hitch a ride...anyway i was in Galveston Texas this past week and actually seen one like i see in the movies he was really wearing 2 different shoes one sandal type and one tennis shoe and i'm pretty sure one was bigger than the other...i'm glad i don't live in a place where that sort of thing is normall to see because my heart breaks for them every time i see one! ( yes even if they r holding a whiskey bottle)

I gave him food once and he threw it out me. Rediculous. I do feel sad for them, because of their either bad situation or bad choices but I didn't give them a second thought. But there other day I saw this teenager with a sign and he did look really dirty, and at first I was like woah sucker probably just looking for a buck. But he looked at me, and I honestly say he had the saddest eyes I ever seen. If I was in the lane closest to him I probably would have taken him home. I felt so bad, and it still bothers me that I didn't give him anything. I wanted to go back but I was really running late for work, after I got off I went back but he wasn't there. I hope he's out there somewhere, happy, cleaner, and getting an education to get a good job.

No. I dont give them any money if they are on my side of the street.
I am not being heartless. I have volunteered at Downtown missions in Los Angeles for over 10 years. No one need go without a meal in a major city.
The problems of the homeless are complicated but giving people money on the side of the freeway is only adding to the problem. Your heart is in the right place, but if you truly want to be part of the solution, donate the money to your local mission or the Salvation Army

It's tough to fill out a job application when you don't have a home address, or references. It's tough to interview successfully when you only have old clothes.
I want to lead them to a homeless shelter with some resources for homeless people. Then I want to buy them a pizza.

Job application. I worked in a donut shop. Early every morning a bum would come in for coffee and a donut. I made him wash the windows.

I once tried to take a homeless guy to a restaurant for lunch. Wanted nothing to do with it - only cash. Nope.

I once saw a man on the corner begging with a sign....talking on a cell phone. I don't even feel slightly bad for them. Any idiot can get a job, but its easier to just chill on the corner taking handouts.
