The one with the red rubber cover is the positive or + lead, and the one without a cover is the earth or - lead.
They correspond to the battery terminals with the same symbols, either + or -.

If one has a red cover that would be your positive line. They generally will have a cover because with water they can corrode. Also most manufactures will make the battery connections just long enough to reach were they need to connect. Looking at the old battery you could be able to tell where the connections should be made.

Follow the wires that you disconnected.

One of the wires will connect directly to the frame of the vehicle. This wire is the ground wire and is connected to the Negative (-) side of the battery.

The other wire will eventually lead to the starter motor. This is the positive side.

Make sure you connect it appropriately. Not doing so will cause major problems such as burning out the car's computer/brain box.

Up until the 60,s cars were positive earth. Then they reverted to negative earth so unless your car is very old the red cable goes to the plus terminal on the battery

Go with hsueh010's answer.

The colors are a strong indication of which is pos and which is neg, but following the wires as he said is the only sure way, especially if it's a used car and you don't know who did the maintenance in the past.

No. And putting batteries in a flashlight backwards will not cause light to be sucked in. Sorry electricity does not work like that. What it will do is fry anything that has diodes in it. This includes your alternator, radio, engine computer and possibly a lot more.

HI, My husband told me the red is positive. Thanks for asking this question. I learned something to. Good luck, and be careful.
FYI...Lately before I take things apart, Ive been taking pictures with my digital camera, then I wont forget how to put things together again. It helped alot when I was sewing a Quilt for my son. But Im getting up there in age, so our minds forget easier.

The red goes to positive and the other goes to negative.

The positive goes to the starter and the negative goes to a location on the frame as a ground.

If you connect it and you see sparks fly, your wiring system smoke and the battery explode... switch them.
