Alta Bates is on Ashby in Berkeley, but they do have campuses elsewhere, including Oakland.

Ashby is a very busy, mostly residential street that runs east and west through reasonably nice parts of Berkeley. A lot of students for UCB live in older homes that have been converted to residents catering to them. Ashby does skirt the central business district of Berkeley and so there are some businesses in that area...supermarket, gasoline station, etc.

Is Ashby, near Alta Bates, a safe place to live? Probably as safe as anywhere in Berkeley. And probably safer than downtown Berkeley and certainly safer than most places in Oakland or nearby Richmond.
