Well, I used to drive a lot of American V8s. Basically the motor would stop running and by process of elimination you get to the timing chain. My VW needs the belt changed every 60k or it will break and the motor will go KA-Boom. Call a dealer in that make of car and ask.

Different manufacturers have different recommended intervals for changing the timing belt often between 60 & 90,000 miles. DO NOT WAIT FOR IT TO FAIL....Depending on the vehicle if you wait for it to happen the valves and pistons can make contact causing major internal engine damage. Check with your local dealer to get recommended replacment intervals.

Each car model is different, but in your manual, it will tell the recommended mileage to do this. I would do it at that mileage, BEFORE it "needs" it, because after it goes out, besides the inconvenience of being broke down, it will be a more expensive repair.

Most car dealers, repair shops and etc say around 65,000. But some out there can go as high as 100,000 before it needs a new one.

Look in your owners manual. The information you asked about is in there. Do not rely on what you are told here, because no one knows what kind of car you have.

ignore the above answers.
3 ways to check
1. Its made from rubber and nylon, so check that there are no loose strings on the cambelt and on the cambelt cover.
2 check for fraying cracks by bending it.
3 check the middle for signs of wear , usually has a line.

Usually around 60,000 miles. See your owners manual for correct mileage.
As stated above: BAD things happen when it breaks.
"Pay Me Now or Pay Me Later".
