If the starter works sometimes it is not the bendix spring (although you can change them) it is the Starter solenoid, a much easier fix.

Were there any shims in the starter? Are you sure the bedix is kicking in and staying in? Is there teeth off the flywheel? On that put it in drive, roll about 6 inches so the flywheel will turn a bit and get to good teeth, also remember your engine stops and starts in 3 different places around the flywheel so would be like a clock 12, 4 and 8. Dont forget to put back in park then try to start, could be starter isnt getting back to flywheel enough causing this, also there is a dust cover between the rear of the engine and the tranny you may have taken off when pulling starter, and you should have noticed any teeth missing then.

yes it can be replaced. If you have the parts, tools and the knowledge or a chilton guide to walk you thru it. The starter solinoid is located by the battery, not the bendix.

Yes, It can be replaced seperately.
What makes you think it is a bad bendix?
The solenoid is near the battery for those that need to know.

I'm thinking on a Ford, the Bendix is separate and lives under the hood, right where the battery hot cable hooks up. K ;o)

you can replace it as long as you have the parts. the shaft could be worn as well so check it to see if it needs sanding
