Edit: I just checked, What you call cockles aren't even sold or eaten here. We have them on beaches in the gulf of mexico but I've never seen them eaten before. I've got plenty of the shells laying around.

I had only heard of them because of Molly Malone, lol.

To the Wikipedia poster below, your own link says that there are over 200 kinds and then lists 2. I PROMISE there are cockles in America and on every other continent as well.

Cockles are not actually clams, but are similar in taste and preparation methods. Mostly imported from New Zealand, cockles are smaller than clams and have a sweet, intense flavor. You would have to order them from a catalog or gourmet food store online. It would be very hard to find them here, it's best to substitute for new england clams.

Can t find cockles here in the US. Clams or scallops aren t even close to the taste of cockles. Probably the only place to get them is in British stores in jars.

If they are a shell fish from the seashore I believe you are thinking of clams or mussels. These are for sale at Market in 2-3oz tins in Northern America.

I'm not sure that cockles live anywhere around America. They're a different family from clams I think.
