I know too much to list here, but to start...

The country has weather similar to Eastern Washington state - around 0-10f temps in the winter, with abotu 4" of snow (average, at any one time), and 70's-80's in the summer (and a few weeks in summer in the 100's).

Economically, they are poor and have a high rate of unemployment. The women are hard working, beautiful, and believe in the separation of "men and women" as to jobs, family responsibilities, and household duties.

The South of Ukraine (Crimea) is formerly Tartar and Turkish, and has a very Florida like climate.

The Central region of Ukraine is very fertile, especially around the Dniper river - and they provide about 60% of the food to Russia via export. Sunflowers are their country symbol, and they produce sunflower seeds, sunflower oil, halva (a sweet made from sunflower), and decorate many things with sunflowers.

The government is corrupt, and "free elections" are not really free elections of officials by the people. Eastern Ukrainians do not like Americans and view them as the sole source of their economic and political troubles, while Western Ukrainians blame the Russians.

I think it is exactly what you are looking for. Everything there is not from the books, but from the real life. Start from the Ukrainian culture, for example. There are a lot of videos there. Check a site map first. It will give you an idea what it is all about.

It is a cold place to live, at the western end of Russia, next to Poland and Hungary. And, some of my ancestors came from there.
