If you go into someone elses (or another companies computer) without permission, and take something, is it illegal? (would you be jailed)

"hacking" itself merely means getting into the computers system. If you are hacking your own computer, as in the book, "Hacking Windows XP", then it is legal.
Going into someone else's computer without their permission is illegal, even if you do not take anything or cause any mischief.
Taking anything can be a very serious crime (think ID theft) and in the case of taking a company's trade secrets, can result not only in a criminal trial leading to emprisonment but also to a civil trial leading to punitive damages and pecuniary reimbursement.

I do not know why you would ask this qestion, but it sounds to me like you have not even thought about it. Gaining access to someones pc with out there consent is illegal same thing about installing if your thinking about vrius to. Of course it's illegal, and they will know about it too, they will not contact you the FBI will just show up at your front door with a shiney pair of hand cuffs and ask you to slip into them....lol

You betcha. You could face as little as a big fine and probation and as much as 10 years in prison. Depends on your criminal history, what you hacked, and what you did.
