LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy (AP) - Pope Benedict reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation.

I no longer believe in the Christian styled biblical god . Prefering the pagan gods of my ancestors
But
I do recal that when I was young we would read aloud a passage from the Book of Common Prayer (BCP)
"The Bishop of Rome hath no jurisdiction in these realms of England "
I was always glad we lived in one of those realms of England

The Pope heads a church with one of the darkest history's on the planet
The Catholic church is well known to this day to protect child moltesting Priests - The Cahtolic Pope of the 2 nd war was a collaborator to Hitler
The Catholic chiurch sponsors in whole or part the terrorist actions of the IRA in Ireland
The Catholic church is directly responsible for ordering the conversion by the sword - know as the Spainish inquisition - an estimated 50 million died
This is the Chrich that is now returning to it's past and saying no one but us talks for god
So yes my question stands
How is this Pope any different from an Islamic wacco causeing political unrest and faning the flames of conflict ?

Point taken - but - I am not accepting that the old pagan gods are anything more than myth of our free society
I believe in them for different reasons and to different ends than you may suppose
But nonetheless it is a vaild observation as so

He hasn't blown anything up lately.
Oh so you're enlightened you've replaced one man-created god for a bunch of man-created gods. Your vast intelligence is shining through.
Good I am humbled by your acquiescence, and duly apologize for the bluntness of my retort.

almost every one has responded with the obvious fact that the Pope, regardless of what the church and other popes may have perpetrated on the world, does NOT advocate violence against people he disagrees with. On the contrary at the height of his controversial statement on Islam he also made it very clear that there was a need as well as room for dialogue between different religions.
Other than that, had the Catholic Church, and most specifically the Spanish Inquisition actually killed 50 million people none of us would be around today. You may find it difficult to believe but the population of India in 1946 (and that included Pakistan since it did not yet exist) was only around 3 hundred million but today has reached 1.1 billion. Even today the total population of the European Union (new members included) barely comes to 450 million. Where did you get your statistics from?
Just to make sure you understand where I am coming from, I am neither a Catholic nor a believer in organised religions.

Here is the full text of the new document that states nothing new: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html
Most Christian denominations believe that each of them is the fullest version of the Church of Christ.
While the Catholic Church also believes that she is "the highest exemplar" of the mystery that is the Church of Christ, she does not claim that non-Catholic Churches are not truly Christian. The Catholic Church teaches:
Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.
Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.
All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 819: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p3.htm#819
With love in Christ.

For starters he's a catholic. At least although he believes protestants like me are pagans or defective, he doesn't send folks out with explosives to kill us.
My personal belief is that this Pope has set back the ecumenical cause a century or so by the latest pronouncement, and I don't mean to minimize it here.

Yours is a ridiculous accusation. I'm not Catholic, and personally am a little offended by his declaration, but your assertion is almost insane. Do you really think it's the same thing to advocate Jihad as it is to assert that what you believe is true?
Oh, I get it. You were taught to be "post-modern" where we're all supposed to sit around and validate each other, and decide that none of us has any grasp on truth. How's that working for you? I mean, really...how does it work when you start out in life assuming that you can never know anything to be true?
I may disagree vehemently with the Pope, but at least he still lives in the real world where two conflicting truth claims can't both be true.

well... today's pope is more westernized... so there's not a lot...
but popes of the past... pretty crazy stuff... inquisitions... crusades... and much more...
but, sometimes it seems like many religions go through a "bloody" period for the first 1,000/1,500 or so...

He is not ordering anyone to kill anyone else because of their faith. Further, he is not telling any government to enforce Catholic doctrine.
Big difference... you just hate religious people in general.
