It's definitely worth it. Fax machines are cheap and if you have long distance, it won't cost anything. Having the fax at home is great. All-in-ones are cheap too. I have a fax-copier-printer-scanner that was only $160 when i bought it, now i see it in the store for $85 bucks. definitely a good idea. If you don't have long distance you'll get charged for a minute of long distance for each page (i did) which wasnt a big deal since i didnt fax that much.

You can purchase a simple fax machine for as little as $70-80 at chain stores like Staples or Office Depot. When you hook it up to a phone line sending or receiving a fax is just like a phone call. You are charged as if it was a phone call so that means long distance for long distance fax numbers. If you do enough faxing that you are looking to get a fax at home, you may want to get a separate phone line for the fax too. Having people call you to say they need to fax you, then turning on the fax or hooking it up, then having the person call again to fax can get very frustrating and annoying. If you are using it for business it is very unprofessional. I have actually stopped using some vendors because it was too much hassle to fax this way.

You don't need a fax machine to fax. You can fax from your computer. Just use an Internet fax service, like MyFax. Faxes are sent/received from your email account. A fax sent from your email will be delivered to your recipient's fax machine. You don't need to download any software with MyFax. You only need an email address to sign up. Take a look at http://www.myfax.com

I don't have a fax machine. For incoming faxes, I use www.k7.net (free service). For outgoing faxes, I send everything using WinFaxPro software. This keeps my office uncluttered (no machine and no need for a 2nd phone line). If I have a hard copy of something that needs to be faxed, I scan it and send it by WinFaxPro.

Although I use my PC to send faxes, from time to time I have to go manual, so yes, it is worth it if you do have to use it regularly. If you send one now and then, well.
They are reasonably cheap and while you are at it, but a combo with the printer and all the other goodies in?
