That does sound rude -- I was a missionary and I never saw any missionary snicker and give dirty looks -- but perception can be part of the battle.
These guys are very busy
They volunteer 18 mo. to 2 years of their 20's to help people find the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
They don't have much time to just shoot the breeze. Be grateful that when you said you weren't interested they let you be. Some on this site say that missionaries hound them.
So -- no we are not taught to be rude and good luck with your life

Do what I did. Buy a bus ride to Utah and get off for a week
in some small town you've never previously experienced.
Walk the town every day. Eat and chat with townfolk. Learn
how life is in a community where Mormons represent the majority population. No, I'm not LDS nor affiliated with any.
My vacations are interesting though. Know of any Catholic
culture strongholds in America that a tourist can eyeball?

Et quicúmque non recéperit vos, neque audíerit sermónes vestros : exeúnte foras de domo, vel civitáte, excútite púlverem de pédibus vestris. Mat. 10:14 (Vulgata Clementina 1861)
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet. Mat. 10:14
Here it says "going forth out"... shake off the dust... It would be very rude to "shake dust" while inside a house!
Door-to-door missionaries can destruct you from doing household chores because you have to listen to their lectures like a little child. They love to make the point that your present religion is entirely wrong and their religion is right!!
I personally don't like door-to-door missionaries. Pardon me!

i was watching this show on MTV called engaged and underage.
this show was about the bride, born and raised Mormon and the groom who wasn't born Mormon, but converted after being in a relationship with her.
well, the groom's family couldn't go to the wedding ceremony because it was in the Mormon church and non-Mormon can not step foot in one.
i thought that was so harsh that the groom's family couldn't watch him get married. they could only go to the reception which was held in a reception hall.
so, i think they might have some preference for their own...

No, they are not usually rude. Snickering is not a good way to influence people.
The missionaries duty is to find lost sheep. If someone says they are happy in their faith, they will go on their way.

Well, in the first place, their "elders" are really just inexperienced kids.
And they are so indoctrinated, they don't understand anything else but LDS teachings.
If you say you want to study with them ONLY FROM THE BIBLE, they will go away. They will not stay solely with the Bible.

Their love for people is very conditional. If you appear not to be interested in converting, they are out of there.

Man, those mormon men are so fickle, after being marriade out of the temple and having a kid, I was trash, or was that too experienced. I was never good enough for them in the first place. They are too sexist anyways.

Before converting over to any religion you must read Walter Martin's book on "Kingdom of the Cults" This will give anyone wisdom on how not to get linked up to a cultist groups who are deceiving people into believing falsehood originated by Satan and His doctrine of devils.

These guys usually have a 'quota' of souls to save, not engage in lively rhetoric regarding dogma. Plus, these are unsophisticated teenagers who are told what to do and when to do it, including eat, sleep, and fart. They have no theological training other than how to present their 'discussions' (mormon discussions are not normally two-way dialogs), and since their budgets worldwide have been slashed, are often 'hungry'.
Cut 'em some slack. Feed them if the spirit of faith and charity moves you to, and if necessary, tell them when their five minutes are up.
