It's from the French, "Respondez S'il Vous Plait", which simply means, Please respond. In other words, let the person who sent you an invite know whether you can make it or not. On some invitations, such as a wedding reception, a reply is necessary to determine how many guests are coming, especially if reservations have to be made.

there is a foreign language literal translation. i forget the entire thing something like rouli vous plai or something close to that. basically is means your reply is needed. so they invited you and you do not reply then show up you will not have a place to sit possibly or food to eat. they need to know how much to spend and plan for food on things like this. simlpe terms. PLEASE REPLY OR RESPOND....
