When the US started building the Interstate system... when we organized a Department of Energy.. when they started building public schools... did people become as upset about that as some have about the possibility of public Health Care? I'm curious because either this is normal and it will pass, or people don't think health care is a universal need.

now now captainobvious.. they may not be perfect, but I feel very confident in saying we are a hell of a lot better off WITH them than without.

a completely uneducated America with no infrastructure?

I'll admit there is room to improve many social programs.

that doesn't mean they aren't needed or that they should be scrapped.

I'm fine with looking at all the possible solution and agree that we should look at them all. I don't think most people would be opposed to a free market solution or whatever if it can be shown to be as much or more efficient and effective and still produce the end results that are desired. I think most people WANT everyone to have it available to them.. despite party.. we just can't figure out a way how that makes most people happy..

If that's the case.. I can live with slowing things down a little in the belief of making sure we do things right.

Yes, people always fight government control, for better or for worse, but future generations always accept it because they have no choice.

It is the way of things.

no kidding since the department of energy and education are so great and all

notice I didnt say anything about the infastructure. you cant compare the road system to a bureaucratic organization. I dont have the exact number so this is off the top of my head but we spend something like 20 times the average cost per student as the rest of the world into the public education system yet we are not any where near the top with regards to output and the department of energy is so corrupted we waste tens of billions of dollars on dead end ideas and lesser technologies that can and do cause more harm than good. I know this is a fundamental difference between us but the governments ability to handle these type of things has a terrible track record and to say "well their not great but it would be better without them" is a little short sided. The private sector produces cheaper and more productive initiatives yes while they sometimes have to be regulated but a complete takeover of the healthcare system will put the world at a dissadvantage not just the us.

Yes, we have been known to fight social programs then learn to accept them. However, social programs are always plagued with problems. Healthcare is extremely important and should be handled with the utmost care. Right now every country that has socialized healthcare has serious problems with it. Could we do it better? Could it be beneficial in comparison to what we have now? That's a possibility, the problem is no one in Washington has come up with an idea that would address the major concerns with socialization. Also, not very many advocates of universal healthcare seem to acknowledge the revolutionary medicine that the freemarket system has given us and how socialization would undermine that progress. Also we have not exhausted freemarket solutions to the problem.

Personally I think we need to really examine several possible solutions. Remember this is a system that we could doom our future generations to.

Health care doesn't need to be provided by the state. The greedy drug companies need to be regulated and audited, and we need to get rid of the illegals, who drive up the price of a tylenol to $50 a pill at the hospitals.

Government run health care is just asking for trouble. I wouldn't put it past the government to poison us/test pesticides on us like they do to the kids in the military, and to orphaned children (look it up)

vlt-505 : YES WE HAVE A CHOICE AND WE WILL FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT IF WE HAVE TO.

When you wrench anything away from capitalists - and renationalise it because it is underperforming (ripping off and killing people)- they predictably scream accusations of "communism".

What do you expect, for them too just silently give up control of a cash cow, because it is "the will of the people"?

erm no..

If democracy worked like that - they would ban it.
