This question has been bugging me for some time. I have worked for several of these guys and a couple of them were kinda nice but for the most part they were rude, angry men of ill-disposition who seemed to expect their employees to be able to read their minds and came un-f*c*ing-glued upon realizing that we cannot. They were also frequently rude to their (female) patients, some of whom left both offices I worked at in tears.

Anyway, it seems to me, from what I have observed, that orthopedic surgeons are generally rude, nasty people. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same expereince or knows why these guys are such jerks.

I just had a hip aspiration, gathering results. They kept calling it an "injection." I kept correcting them. They never told me to ice it. I can t put weight on my right leg now and after two weeks, the pain is unbearable. They also forgot to get a major test ordered once they had fluid. The doctor won t return my call and apparently I face two more surgeries to do what the first one didn t do correctly. One, at a very "famous" hospital in New York actually "shushed" me when I tried to tell him what a leading orthopedic surgeon in Spain said about my x-ray and refused to look at my MRIs, saying it would be a waste of his valuable time. Orthopedic surgeons and the hospitals that allow them to reign supreme are a disgrace to medicine. If you want brains and empathy, leave the US. I hate American orthopedic surgeons.

I've worked for several surgeons, and they are all the same, so it is not just the orthopods. I think they end up with some kind of "God" complex. One even used to say to us as he was leaving for the hospital, "Ok, I'm off to heal the masses!" We used to just roll our eyes, and thank God that he was gone for a few hours.
The one doctor that I worked for who was incredibly nice was an internist/nuclear medicine specialist. That was the best job I ever had, and I was sorry when the man retired.
Edit: To those of you who "know wonderful orthopedic surgeons" try working for one. Surgeons, for the most part, treat their patients fairly because they know which side of their bread is buttered. Their staff, on the other hand, is treated to their Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde routine.

That is what I call the "Doctor/God" syndrome. It's not just orthopedic surgeons, it's cardiologists, neuro-surgeons...I could go on and on. Some of them act like real butt-heads and LOVE to terrorize nurses and make them feel incompetent. BUT! not all doctors are this way, I worked for a general practitioner down in FL for 4 years before I moved. We hit it off! It took a while to earn her respect and trust. I busted my butt for her and finally we had a great rapport. I hated to leave her when my husband and I moved to GA. We still casually talk and email each other.

I have to agree that most I've dealt with are egotistical jerks who think they are the only ones with the answers. I have had several back surgeries, a titanium rod in my leg and pins in my ankles all done by an orthopedic surgeon. When I was still in severe pain after the surgery & physical therapy, he said, well you shouldn't be. Then he sent me to pain management because he said he had done all he could do. I still have chronic pain & am on disability now. My wife had si joint fusion by an ortho and he was terrible to her after the surgery. She did have 1 good experience with a young orthopedic Dr who listened to her & really tried to help. I think most of them are just egomaniacs! Neurologists are just as bad, maybe even worse!

You are stereotyping orthopedic surgeons. The one that I have used is a very caring doctor and I have nothing but respect for him.
