In the 2005 United Nations World Drug Report, the value of the global illicit drug market for the year 2003 was estimated at US$13 billion at the production level, at US$94 billion at the wholesale level, and at US$322 billion based on retail prices and taking seizures and other losses into account.

These amounts of money cannot be moved or used without the implicit collusion of the international banking industry. If the banks don't know where the money in the system is coming from then they are guilty, at the very least, of criminal incompetence.

The solution is to stop "dirty" money moving through the system. However, as more than 30% of inward investment in the West is from criminal sources the drugs problem is not likely to end soon.

Change the laws so that pushers and users are given the death penalty, the sales and use of illegal drugs leads to death anyway so the end result is the same. The dealers are just as guilty of murder as a person that shoots the victims as the addict that pulls the trigger.

It would not take long for the dealer to realize that it does not pay enough to risk his life and because there would be less pushers on the streets, the cost of these drugs would be to high, one purchase at the going rate plus your life might convince the user to stop using and get the help he needs to quit.

Narcotic opium derivatives are a major part of western medicine... Ok, its a double-edged sword because it DOES also cause crime and violence sometimes when its used improperly.

But its impossible for me to conceive that it will ever fully go away so long as research and development continues for what we consider pain relievers, anti-depressants, and anti-anxiety medicine. Prosecution doesn't eliminate illicit usage, but it does make criminals out of some part of the population that has committed no other crime, such as theft and violence. I do not think people should be arrested and incarcerated because their drug of choice makes them statistically more likely to do something else wrong later. That argument could easily be made against alcohol as well - its a gateway, its abusers are more violent than the general population, poorer, commit more crimes, etc.
