Why or why not?

Gladly.

It would be about time we had a president who refused to believe in fairy tales written by ignorant sheep herders thousands of years ago.

Though they would have to bring more qualifications to the table than just not believing in God - but sound foreign, domestic, and fiscal policies are much more likely to come from an administration that is firmly rooted in reality.

That would be a great day in America, but for the time being a black man or a woman have a better chance of being elected than an athiest.

If it's a choice between equally qualified candidates, I would definitely vote for the atheist, as I would know that his/her primary motivation would be the best interests of the country, rather than making some goblin in the sky happy.

Sure if he or she was thr right candidate for the job and to be honest, in regards to Bush I feel like we've voted for an atheist already

I'd vote for the candidate I felt would do a good job. I wouldn't care if he/she was an atheist. Just like I don't care if Romney's a Mormon. As long as the candidate doesn't impose his/her religious/philosophical beliefs on the American public, I'd have no problem.

That depends... what are his stances on "the issues"?... does he believe in morality if not religion?...I like to think that my leaders have moral character but I don't care whether they get it from religion or somewhere else... anyone who votes for a person based on one aspect of their personality (whether or not they believe in God, for example) should probably not be voting...that being said, all else equal, I would probably vote for a candidate with religious views similar to mine before I would vote for an atheist... but then who wouldn't...

Absolutely. What I would have to watch out for though is allowing myself to be in that persons camp just because they think more like me in regards to religion. I don't mind religious people in office either - as long as they don't rely on god's answers to lead the country.

If he/she could fix the deficit, resolve the war, and improve the educational quagmire that our nation is in, then definitely. And I am a Christian. It is not like the President is our religious leader. He's a secular leader, and we need someone who can fix our many secular problems. Doesn't matter what his religious beliefs are, provided they did not contradict his ability to resolve the nation's problems and lead us.

Yes.

In fact, I would prefer an atheist candidate over a religious extremist or wannabe who "finds Jesus" to be electable.

Yes, after the Bush experience, it would be refreshing
to have someone in office who primarily cares & has
faith in humanity.

Well, considering our current President was on the phone with god before he invaded Iraq, I sure would. We could at least be assured god wouldn't get us into another conflict.
